Summary
Final Fantasyis a series that doesn’t shy away fromdepicting divine figures. These gods and goddesses boast a ton of power and can easily decimate their foes without too many problems, with only the mightiest warriors around standing a chance of holding their own against these deities.
However, in comparison to the other divine beings in the series, there are some gods and goddesses whose powers are notably underwhelming. This is in no way trying to label these deities as weaklings, but fans will be pretty disappointed by the strength these divine characters wield when they get their chance to shine.
Dissidia Final Fantasy NTwas a mixed bag compared to the universally positive reception of the two games preceding it, but fans who only want to check out this game for its plot will love how engaging it is.Chaos and Cosmos are long gone, replaced by other gods formed from their will. Materia is the goddess who fights for the side of good, although it doesn’t take long for characters to realize that there’s more to this conflict than what meets the eye.
It doesn’t help that Materia is essentially clueless about the worlds that eachFinal Fantasycharacter comes from, making them more suspicious about the true nature of the conflict. Despite her divine power, the fact that Materia refuses to hear the voice of reason for long and doesn’t boast as much strength as Cosmos makes her a weak god who doesn’t have too much of an impact.
Fighting against Materia is Spiritus and his host of champions, who are villains from previousFinal Fantasygames. He’s a God of Magic who looks like a divine version of Jecht, especially given the design of his sword. While there’s no denying that he’s one of the strongest beings inFinal Fantasy, his strength as a god pales in comparison to the other deities in the series.
It doesn’t help that he doesn’t have the overbearing presence ofhis predecessor, Chaos, and has no clue about the true conflict in this game. It’s not until he sees the light that he forms an uneasy alliance with Materia in a bid to fight off Shinryu and his manifestations.
The Astrals ofFinal Fantasy 15are in a class of their own, with powerful beings like Ramuh and Titan appearing time and time again to show off the immense power they wield. The sheer size and spectacle of these Astrals make it clear that they can obliterate most foes with ease, which is why Ifrit’s power seems so lacking in comparison.
Despite the cold open making it seem like he boasts immense power, players who finally get to battle against this foe will soon realize just how weak he is compared to the other Astrals in the series. Noctis and his friends boast enough power to weaken him before Bahamut and Shiva land the final blow andtake out this God of Fire for good.
The nation of Wutai serves as the stage for a compelling side quest if Yuffie is in the party. She steals the party’s materia and makes a break for it, forcing players to give chase as they try to understand why their friend decided to betray them in such a manner. Over the course of events, Yuffie’s backstory and the history of Wutai are revealed as the party forgives her for her theft and they continue onward with their adventure.
It’s revealed that the nation of Wutai worships Leviathan as the God of Water, making him a powerful deity. So, it’s odd that his essence is easily captured in materia that players can use to call upon his power whenever they wish. It doesn’t help that Leviathan’s power pales in comparison to the other mid and late-game summons players can acquire in the series, making his status as a god somewhat underwhelming inFinal Fantasy 7.
Given that Yu Yevon is the original summoner who has somehow managed to immortalize himself and fool an entire nation into following his teachings, fans expected a tough fight from him when he was placed as the final boss. However, the Fayth ensured that the party wouldn’t fall against this boss with a permanent cast of Reraise, guaranteeing that the fight plays out like a glorified cinematicof sorts.
This would’ve been okay had Yu Yevon shown off his powers in the fight, but all he does is resort to Gravity spells that end up depleting his life bar, too. Once players take care of the Pagodas protecting this divine figure, all they have to do is wallop this boss with the most powerful techniques in their arsenal to free Spira from the cycle of destruction that had plagued it for ages.
