Ubisoft

For its part, publisher Ubisoft seems to be betting that there’s space to compete with Respawn Entertainment’sApex Legends, which launched its Season 24 update in February.According to a report from Insider Gaming, an in-development game project code-named “Scout” is in the works and is “heavily inspired” byApex Legends. In fact, the report claims that it’s so heavily inspired by the first-person battle royale that at one point, developers used art fromApex Legendsas a placeholder thumbnail image for the project.

Ubisoft Project Scout Is Reportedly a Battle Royale Similar to Apex Legends

The report on Project Scout said that the game has been in development for at least two years, but did not include any footage or assets from the game nor any indication of a release window or target platforms. Sources did say that the game was so close toApexthat its current playable roster features characters that are “very similar” topopularApexLegendslike Wraith, Lifeline, and Pathfinder. One source said that the goal of Project Scout is to “capitalize” on a perceived decline in the popularity ofApex Legends, along with confidence in Ubisoft leadership that there’s a chance for another hero-based battle royale game to succeed.

Based on the report, Ubisoft’s design for Project Scout could include a heavy emphasis on movement and agility. The source mentionsApex Legendscharacter Wraith and her portals, as well as Pathfinder, who can navigate using zip lines and grappling hooks. If Project Scout has similar characters in its roster, mobility and movement gimmicks will likely be a major element of gameplay.

Despite research saying that manyplayers are beginning to lose interest in battle royale games, it looks like the industry is set to debut at least a few more in the future. It’ll be up to time and luck to see if Ubisoft will see Project Scout become a rival toApex Legends, whenever it does end up releasing.
