The Fantastic Four: First Stepsis one of the upcoming movies fromMarvel Studios, which is coming out in three months. The Fantastic Fourstars and its director recently sat with Entertainment Weekly to discuss the anticipated MCU tentpole. The stars had the chance to share more details about their characters and Kirby expressed her excitement about portraying Sue, who has one of the most interesting character developments in the comics. She has become a mother, leader and a dark version of herself — Malice. The Fantastic Four First Stepswill explore Sue’s pregnancy, but Kirby also ensured that her version of Invisible Woman will showcase Sue’s dark side. She said:

One of the things I love most from Sue’s history is when she becomes Malice, and all her dark stuff comes out. I was obsessed with that chapter of her life. So I wanted to verify that there were tones of Malice in there with her, that she wasn’t just the stereotype of a goody, sweet mother.

Kirby admitted that she was very interested in Sue’s personality. She was wondering how she was able to live her life wearing different hats. She acknowledged that Sue is a “tough, invincible, powerful woman” who is also a mother. She also praised their characters because they are “real humans in a messy family who argue and try to work it out and get things wrong.” Adding an element ofMaliceto Sue’s personality will definitely spice up the character. Not only is Malice Sue’s dark version, but she is also the reflection of the latter’s repressed fear, hate, and doubt.

Adding Malice’s persona to Sue’s character makes sense because she has gone through a lot as a woman. Malice is the persona formed from the complexities and emotional toll Sue is going through being a superhero, mother, and wife. Malice reflects Sue’s trauma and bottled-up feelings. She is the only woman on the team and is treated as the weakest and most passive member. She always plays the peacekeeper between Reed, Johnny and Ben. Sue has to deal with being the last in a team full of men. She has to face a similar ordeal whenshe becomes a motherbecause she has to consider her children. For most of her life, Sue has to prioritize others over herself, hence the pent-up emotions. This makes her an easy target for Psycho-Man, who amplifies and manipulates emotions in the comics.

It is unclear whether Psycho-Man will appear inThe Fantastic Four: First Stepssince the big bad in the film isGalactus. However, knowing what Sue is going through, it is still possible for Kirby to acknowledge her character’s dark version. Everyone has a dark side, but some successfully manage them, while others can’t handle them and they just snap. Motherhood alone is a heavy obligation and becomes more challenging for someone with the burden of protecting Earth from alien invasions and cosmic entities. What Kirby shared about herFantastic Fourcharacter only made Sue one of the characters fans will closely follow when they watch the movie.

The Fantastic Four: First Stepswill hit theaters on July 09, 2025.
