Summary
The Walking Deadspinoff,Dead CitySeason 2, is just around the corner as it welcomes back the return of Lauren Cohan as Maggie and Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Negan to the hit AMC series. In a bid to hype up its return, new posters of the pair have been released, but fans ofThe Walking Dead’s post-apocalyptic series aren’t happy at all with the results.
In theDead CitySeason 2 trailer, Negan and Maggie have once again teamed up to gain control of the overrun city after the pair found themselves trapped on opposite sides in a battle for control in New York City. Set to the Rodgers & Hart song ‘Manhattan’, Maggie can be seen holding Negan’s iconic baseball bat ‘Lucille’, which, ironically, Negan used to bash her husbandGlenn to death inThe Walking Dead’s seventh season. InDead Cityseason 1, fans saw Maggie and Negan go to Manhattan together to rescue Maggie’s son, Hershel, from The Croat. Viewers also saw Negan being hunted by a lawman called Armstrong, as well as encountering a group of survivors called The Burazi. Now, as Season 2 peaks over the horizon, the show’s new posters have caused quite a stir amongThe Walking Deadfandom.
As showcased viaBleeding Cool, new key art posters forThe Walking Dead: Dead CitySeason 2have been released. The two posters show off the pair in separate poses, where Maggie takes the central stage in one as she towers over Negan and then the bat-wielding Negan can be seen holding Lucille on his shoulder with Maggie pulling out a knife underneath. Both of the posters highlight a neon hue with Radio City highlighted in the background and a few walkers too, accompanied by the slogan, “New Rules. New Enemies. New York.”
However, some fans of the AMC series aren’t impressed one bit by the newDead Cityposters and feel that the series is clutching at straws and has become out of touch with what madeThe Walking Deadgreat to begin with. Over on Reddit, a thread of the new posters uploaded by userAtea2states that Season 2 now “Perfectly demonstrates how out of touch TWD is from what made it great”, referring to how the originalWalking Deadposters once looked. One comment expressed that the key art for the show’s return “Looks like an MCU poster”, while another fan replied to the post to say, “Dead City feels like a fan project.” Another fan of the series said that the “New poster looks so cheap and unappealing.”
The early seasons ofThe Walking Dead’s key art posters have always been iconic, featuring amazing moments like Rick running towards the farmhouse or riding down the highway on a horse towards Atlanta, so it’s understandable why some fans miss the simpler yet bold imagery the franchise used to produce. Quite a few comments in the Reddit thread would love nothing more than forThe Walking Deadto discontinue its spin-offs to develop one bigWalking Deadseries, but according to Scott Gimple, that likely won’t be a reality, at least anytime soon, as theseries boss has big plans when it comes to the future ofThe Walking Deadspin-offs.
The Walking Dead: Dead CitySeason 2 premieres May 4 on AMC & AMC+
