Injustice 3has yet to be announced, but lovers of NetherRealm Studios' DC-based fighting series will certainly be rejoicing if that announcement ever comes. Players continue to hope forInjustice 3, and while the game has not been officially confirmed, a third entry in the series now seems more likely than ever.

The current CEOs of DC Studios,James Gunn and Peter Safran, recently revealed that they have been in talks with WB-owned studio NetherRealm, and, while not definitive, that could hint at the existence ofInjustice 3. It’s been a long eight years sinceInjustice 2was released, and the longer NetherRealm waits to make the next entry, the more time the entry will have to spend on recapping the overall story.

The Complex Lore of Injustice Can Be Difficult to Summarize

A lot happened inInjustice: Gods Among UsandInjustice 2. Between the dismantling of Superman’s One Earth Regime in the first game and the arrival of The Society and Brainiac in the second, there is a lot to know going into a hypotheticalInjustice 3.

Unless NetherRealm has been secretly working on a thirdInjusticegame for quite some time, it may still be years before this next entry arrives. This means thatInjustice 3could release a full decade, or more, after the launch ofInjustice 2.Unless a fan replaystheInjusticefranchiseoften, they may not remember the story arc in its entirety for that amount of time. While fans could simply replay both games just before the release ofInjustice 3, in order to get proper recaps, they may prefer to jump right into the new game instead of spending time rehashing old plot points.

If Gunn and Safran’s DC film universe takes off, it could set the stage forInjustice 3to be greenlit by Warner Bros.

Injustice 3 Can’t Dwell On the Past Too Much

The long wait betweenInjustice 2andInjustice 3really puts the writers at NetherRealm in a difficult and interesting position. It’s a given that they will want to give players a rundown of what happened in the first and second games, but how the writers go about doing that remains to be seen. There could simply be an option in the game’s menu to watch a recap of the most-important events up until that point, though that could make addressing those past events withinthe story ofInjustice 3feel jarring.

NetherRealm’s Next Move is a Huge Mystery

SinceMK1is NetherRealm’s most recent game, and the aforementioned job listing specifies “experience with martial arts/fighting games,” it only makes sense for one to assume that the developer is preparing more content for that title. However, the listing could be pointing towardsInjustice 3’s development. Anexpansion forMK1may be more likely, but there is still a chance thatInjustice 3is drawing closer to becoming a reality.
