The Joel And Ellie Flashbacks Are The Emotional Core Of The Story
Joel’s tragic death occurs very early in the game, and the character only reappears when Ellie stops to reflect on her time with Joel between the first and second games. The player gets to experience thesememories as playable flashbacks. For the most part, they served as wholesome breaks in Ellie’s gruesome revenge quest, where the player gets to seeJoel and Ellie interact with each otherlike they did in the first game.
This was a way for the game to keep players particularly engaged with Joel to keep playing after his death. The TV show could also similarly use flashbacks for them to be able to continue using Pedro Pascal in their future marketing. However, the released trailers seem to be using a lot of the content from these flashbacks, implying that they will be told in this upcoming season. Audiences have already been given a peek at Ellie’s birthday trip, the scene whereEllie discovers the truth about the fireflies, and even thevery final scene of the gamewhere Joel is sitting on his porch playing guitar.
The inclusion of this final flashback suggests that HBO is planning on burning through all the potential flashback content in Season 2.
