Split Fictionis a cooperative action-adventure game developed by Hazelight Studios and published by Electronic Arts. The plot follows two female characters — Mio Hudson and Zoe Foster, who are aspiring authors trapped inside a simulation of their own stories when a publishing deal goes awry. TheSplit Fiction game was announced at The Game Awards on July 16, 2025, and released on July 02, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Due to its successful launch,a live-action adaptation was greenlitjust two weeks after its release. It was announced during the Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco, and Story Kitchen was reportedly assembling a creative team to create the feature. Major Hollywood studios were in a bidding war for movie rights, which Amazon eventually won. The film is making progress, having cast one of its leads.
TheAnyone But Youstar will star in theSplit Fictionmovie, Variety reported. The anticipated film will be directed by Jon M. Chu, who is known forWicked(2024),Crazy Rich Asians(2018),Now You See Me 2, andG.I. Joe: Retaliation(2013) to name a few. Screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, who wrote Marvel Studios' 2024 hitDeadpool & Wolverine, will write the script. Mike Goldberg and Dmitri M. Johnson’sStory Kitchenand Chu’s Electric Somewhere will produce the film.Sweeneywill also executive produce, aside from playing one of the leads. There are still no details as to who, between Zoe or Mio, Sweeney will portray in the live-action.
In theSplit Fictiongame, Zoe and Mio are only two of the six authors that Rader Publishing invited to try a simulation device called “The Machine” that will allow one to experience the stories they submitted. The occupants, in this case, the authors, are encased in a bubble while in their story. However, the reserved Mio, who is only interested in their compensation, starts to panic and changes her mind. Rader forces her to continue the experiment, and the scuffle leads her to fall into Zoe’s bubble, trapping the pair in Zoe’s fantasy story. A glitch occurs, transporting them to Mio’s science-fiction story. The pair discovers more glitches along the way since The Machine is only designed to handle one occupant. And that’s where the story begins.
Many are drawn toSplit Fictionbecause of its exciting gameplay, which is imaginative and emotionally engaging. It delves into the themes of creativity, personal growth and collaboration, which anyone can easily relate to. While it is still unclear what role Sweeney will play, she can actually be either Zoe or Mio. The two characters are polar opposites. Mio is reserved, a realist, and an introvert, while Zoe is charismatic, an optimist, and an extrovert. Zoe is a cheerful country girl who loves fantasy and this reflects in her work. She shapeshifts into magical beings and can command mythical creatures and wield enchanted weapons. On the other hand, Mio is a city girl raised by her father and she is into science fiction. Her fondness for sci-fi is evident in her literary works, where she can be seen as a gravity-defying ninja with an energy sword or wearing an advancedexosuitwith a remote control for drones.
Considering Sweeney’s versatility in her previous movies, theMadame Webstar can easily give a compelling performance as Zoe or Mio. However, if one considers her physical appearance, Sweeney is more likely to play Zoe, who has long, wavy auburn hair, fair skin, and green eyes.
The live-action adaptation ofSplit Fictiondoes not have a confirmed release date as it is still in its early stages of development.
