Summary

Everyone’s favoriteStar Warsactor was recently caught unaware by some polite fans looking for an autograph, and he managed to give fans everywhere a laugh along with the signature with a snappy franchise reference.

TheStar Warsprequels were notable for the cast of the trilogy as much as the story being told, and none of the stars stood out as much as Ewan McGregor. McGregor took on the role of a younger Obi-Wan Kenobi than the wizened sage fans saw in the original trilogy, playing it so well as to be compared to Alec Guinness, a compliment few can lay claim to. In addition to tons of quotable lines and easy charm that worked on and off-screen, McGregor’s Kenobi was also at the center of the trilogy’s coolest fight scenes and its emotional core via his character’s relationship and conflict with Hayden Christensen’s Anakin Skywalker.

Since then,McGregor and Christensen have reunited on theObi-Wan Kenobilimited seriesand reminded fans just how much that relationship meant, as well as how it came to a fiery end. McGregor certainly hasn’t forgotten that iconic moment, and a recent fan interaction makes it clear. In a video uploaded to social media by userfuji_sk8rat on TikTok, fans can see McGregor being given a fan’s hat to sign, with the supporter informing the star that he’d gotten Hayden Christensen to sign it the day before. On seeing his co-star’s signature, McGregor asks, “Can I be above him? I’m trying to get the high ground on him,” referencing the climactic scene between the two at the end of the prequel trilogy that’s since become perhaps the most iconicStar Warsmeme in popular culture. The comment elicited joyous laughter from the fans, with the owner of the headwear gleefully permitting McGregor to take the entire top portion of the hat for himself.

Ewan McGregor Simply Loves Being Obi-Wan Kenobi

This was a pretty interesting interaction for the fans involved and serves as a reminder of just how delightful the actor can be. While evenMcGregor himself admitsStar Wars' prequels weren’t Shakespeare, that doesn’t mean that the three films didn’t feature some stellar writing in places. Of these notable triumphs in the writer’s room, none hit quite as hard as that iconic scene between Obi-Wan and Anakin, by then already Darth Vader in spirit, if not visage. Since the first time it played in theaters, fans have been making jokes and memes about Obi-Wan’s “high ground advantage” scene, and McGregor intoning that line so casually in this context was absolutely hilarious to watch. Best yet, since Christensen already signed the hat in question, there’s no recourse left for him to get his revenge with, just like in the actual film.

McGregor has been one of the best stars within the franchise since he joined it, and this little unplanned interaction is a perfect microcosm of why he’s so well loved. The actor never misses a step and always has the franchise on his mind, and fans certainly miss him when he’s not actively involved. It did seem likeMcGregor’s enthusiasm for moreObi-Wan Kenobiwas paying off, so there’s a chance that Disney+ will be getting another season of the original limited series in the near future. Regardless of how that works out, McGregor certainly still has the high ground in the hearts of the fandom in perpetuity.
