The Greedy History of Captain Hondo Ohnaka Explained
ForStar Warsfans who only watch the films and play a few games, Hondo Ohnaka may seem like just another new, random alien making a name for himself in the galaxy. While Ohnaka has attempted to become rich and famous throughout the galaxy, this Weequay pirate is actually one of the most recurring side characters inStar Warshistory, having appeared in numerousStar Warstelevision shows, books, comics, and even Disney World and Disneyland’s Galaxy’s Edge.Ohnaka was first created in 2009forStar Wars: The Clone Wars’ Season 1 episodes “Dooku Captured” and “The Gungan General." Here, Ohnaka was shown to be in charge of a fairly large pirate gang on the planet Florrum, dealing primarily in the illegal spice and black market weapons trade.
In his first episodes, Ohnaka was able to trick and capture not just the Sith Lord Count Dooku but the Jedi Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker, holding them for ransom from the Galactic Republic. While his ransom was ultimately foiled by the chaotic actions of Jar Jar Binks, Ohnaka would go on to appear in several arcs ofThe Clone Wars, attempting to profit off of whatever he could but slowly becoming friends with Kenobi and the Jedi padawan Katooni. Throughout these episodes, Ohnaka was revealed to have close ties withJango Fett and Aurra Singand even managed to fend off the Sith Maul and Savage Opress as well as General Grievous, though the latter did ultimately destroy his original pirate business.
Hondo Ohnaka’s Appearances Beyond The Clone Wars
Due to his comedic charm, Ohnaka quickly became one of the most popular side characters fromThe Clone Wars, both by fans and Lucasfilm staff. This popularity caused Ohnaka to be one of the few Clone Warscharacters to return inStar Wars Rebels, where he repeatedly attempted to build a new pirate crew but became close friends with the Jedi padawan Ezra Bridger, even going so far as to helpliberate Bridger’s home planet of Lothalfrom the Empire. After his appearance inRebels, Ohnaka went on to appear in severalStar Warsshows, books, and comics, even appearing in a few games, including:
Hondo Ohnaka’s Potential Endgame in Star Wars Outlaws
By the timeStar Wars Outlawstakes place in the galaxy, Hondo Ohnaka had been relatively down on his luck for about 20 years. While the onset of the Galactic Civil War helped Ohnaka thrive in criminal activities with the Empire being distracted by the Rebel Alliance, he never truly regained his powerful position as a true pirate captain. Instead, he formed Ohnaka Transport Solutions in 4 ABY to provide transport and cargo services to various criminal, legitimate, and military organizations, often to fill his own pockets and to quietly support the Rebel Alliance. Given thatStar Wars Outlawstakes place around 3 ABY, A Pirate’s Fortune could set up Ohnaka’s desire to form Ohnaka Transport Solutions.
While the newStar Wars Outlaws: A Pirate’s Fortune reveal trailer suggests that Hondo Ohnaka initially hired or at least collaborated with the Rokana Raiders to go after the Khepi Tomb’s treasure, Ohnaka may use both the Raiders and the Trailblazer crew to his advantage. Ohnaka has historically used conflicting parties to profit scot-free, such as his acquisition of an Ugnaught pirate crew and an Imperial Sentinel-class shuttle during a battle between the Empire and Rebels.Ohnaka may serve as an ally to Vessat first, but could end up stealing the treasure for himself towards the end of the expansion to help fund his burgeoning Ohnaka Transport Solutions business.
Hondo Ohnaka is played by legendary voice actor Jim Cummings, who is also known for voicing Winnie the Pooh, Tigger, Taz the Tasmanian Devil, Disney’s Pete, andFallout 1’s The Master, among many other roles.
