Squid Gameis a South Korean survival drama thriller that debuted onNetflixin September 2021. It was well received, with the critics praising it for its storytelling, performances, and deep social commentary about inequality, capitalism, and human desperation. It dominated Netflix’s top spot for weeks, making it the most popular non-English show on the streaming giant. Squid Game Season 2 was also a hit and is the second most popular non-English show on Netflix. Finally, fans will get to see Gi-hun’s final story arc in Season 3, which is due in a couple of weeks.
Lee Jung-jae, who portrays themain protagonist Gi-hunin the series, shared some details about the show. According to him, the previous seasons were challenging to film, but the most difficult scene for him was in the final season. Jung-jae said Season 1 was “physically and mentally” exhausting for Gi-hun. He also named a particular game that was very difficult for him to play.“I would say that the most difficult game I had to shoot was the last game of the first season, which isSquid Game,” Jung-jae said in an interview with Motion Pictures. However, he teased that the worst part was something fans should look forward to seeing in Season 3. He said:
I think of all of the seasons all together, the most challenging and the most difficult one was the last round that will be seen in Season 3. That was the most difficult to shoot.
Jung-jae finding it hard to film the Squid Game round in Season 1’s finale is understandable. Squid Game is a popular children’s game in South Korea where the players are divided into two teams — offense (attackers) and defense (defenders). It is called “Squid” or “Squid Game” because of the squid-shaped court on which it is played. The defense can run on two feet within the bounds of the court, while the offense, initially outside the squid-shaped court, can only hop on one foot until they reach the squid’s neck. In the final battle, the attackers must tap the top of the court with their foot to win. In Season 1, Squid Game was the last game, and Gi-hun played againstSang-woo (Park Hae-soo), a childhood friend. However, when he was about to win, he decided to stop the game to save Sang-woo because only one had to win and survive to take home the cash prize. Sang-woo knew he was already defeated and decided to die, so Gi-hun could win and take the money.
Jung-jae is right that Squid Game is difficult to play. One, the attackers have to hop on one foot, which requires balancing. Two, it’s a physical game, which involves pushing, shoving and wrestling and doing it on one foot for the offense, in the case of Jung-jae’s Gihun (who chose to play the offense), makes it even more challenging. Additionally, since the shapes and lines drawn on the court are in tight spaces, one has to be quick and strategic. Overall, it requires speed, technique and quick reactions to win the game. The children’s play was brutally amplified in Netflix’sSquid Game, making it physically, emotionally and mentally draining. However, Jung-jae teased that the last round in Season 3 was more challenging, stirring fans' imagination about what game he possibly could be referring to. The games to be featured inSquid Game Season 3have remained under wraps. However, there are rumors that it might include Monkey Bars and Jack and Jill, a new game in its Roblox version. No matter what games will be featured in the finale, one thing is certain — it will have a fatal twist.
