Well, it finally happened. After watching your friend Kevin repeatedly tell you how “you just had to experience Among Us in VR,” the gaming gods have smiled upon us non-headset peasants. Among Us 3D lands on May 6, and it’s bringing all the paranoia-inducing goodness of the original into a first-person 3D world that works across both regular PC andVR.
Schell Gameshas been teasing this since their rebrand announcement on April 10, but now we’ve got the actual date to plan our sick days around. Go ahead and wishlist it now before you forget, we all know you’re going to buy it anyway.
Prepare To Literally Jump When You Get Murdered
I don’t know about you, but I’ve definitely thought about how much more terrifying Among Us would be if I couldn’t see what was happening behind me. Among Us 3D is basically taking that nightmare and making it reality, dropping you into a first-person view wherethe impostor could be right behind you, and you’d never know until it was too late.
The official description promises everything will be “close-up and personal,” which is fancy speak for “you’re going to scream when a knife-wielding bean jumps out at you.” Seeing an impostor vent in the original is just a cute little animation. In 3D? It’s a full-on horror movie moment as a whole bean person disappears into the floor in front of you. My neighbors are already preemptively filing noise complaints.
Your VR Friend Can Finally Shut Up About How You’re “Missing Out”
The absolute best part of this whole thing?Full crossplay between PC and VR, so our PC friends can join VR lobbies without dropping $400 on hardware. This is huge for everyone. VR players get more people to play with (and murder), and PC players get to experience the 3D immersion without getting VR Face. It’s a rare W for both sides of the hardware divide. Now we canallaccuse each other of being sus in the same lobby.
Word on the street is, this crossplay functionality is getting standing ovations from beta testers. It’s apparently seamless, and VR players and PC players can interact naturally without either side feeling like they’re getting a compromised experience. Definitely big news for friend groups split between VR and PC.
Schell Finally Made It Official
You know what’s been happening since like 2020? Among Us players making up their own Hide and Seek rules. Innersloth clearly noticed, because they’ve gone ahead and made it official with the new TAG mode. One player becomes the “Infected” and tries to hunt down and infect everyone else, while the rest race to finish tasks before they all get caught.
It’s basically the unofficial mode we’ve all been playing, but now with actual rules and balancing. Props to Innersloth for paying attention to how people were actually playing their game and being like “yeah that’s cool, let’s make it better.”
Dress To Impress (Before You’re Ejected Into The Void)
I like to maintain that if you’re going to die in space, at least die looking fabulous. Among Us 3D is cranking up the fashion with “dozens of cosmetics from hats, gloves, and skins” for your little murder bean. The store’s been completely revamped, with a new currency called Stardust that lets you customize your avatar to ridiculous levels.
This is especially great news for VR players who’ve been seriously limited in their dress-up options. Now everyone can rock their own signature style, which honestly just makes betrayal that much more personal. There’s something extra painful about being stabbed by someone wearing the exact hat you recommended to them last round.
Yell At Your Friends Without Opening Discord
Possibly the biggest quality-of-life upgrade: integrated voice chat. No more Discord setup, no more typing “where???” eight times in a row, no more trying to explain which hallway you found the body in using only the chat box.
Anyone who’s played the original knows how chaotic text chat gets during emergency meetings. Now imagine that chaos, but with actual human voices all trying to talk over each other. “IT’S BLUE I SAW HIM VENT” “NO I WAS DOING TRASH” “GUYS I THINK IT’S RED” – all while the vote timer ticks down and someone’s definitely lying to your face. It’s going to be a beautiful, big-ole mayhem.
So, What’s The Deal With This?
May 6. That’s when you may finally experience the joy of being murdered by your friends in glorious 3D. The crossplay between PC and VR is the standout feature here, along with that sweet integrated voice chat, expanded customization, and the official TAG mode.
Here’s a friendly reminder: head to your platform’s store page to wishlist this bad boy right now. Not only does it help you remember when the game launches, but it gives the devs a boost in the algorithm, which is the least we can do for a team that’s consistently delivered one of gaming’s most unique social experiences.
The best part is that Among Us 3D isn’t trying to reinvent the wheel – it’s taking everything we already love about the game and making it more immediate, more intense, and frankly, more terrifying. Whether you’re a veteran player or someone who’s somehow avoided playing one of the biggest games of the last few years, May 6 is your chance to jump in.
Just one last tip – if you’re playing in first-person mode, alwayscheck behind you in electrical.
Always.
