Summary

Ryan Reynolds got candid about the future of his MCU character,Deadpool. According to the actor, the Merc with a Mouth should not make his wishes come true.

Reynolds has portrayedDeadpoolin multiple movies. He made his debut as Wade Wilson inX-Men Origins: Wolverine(2009). However, it was widely criticized because it strayed from the source material. He reprised the role inDeadpool(2016) andDeadpool 2(2018). Both films were produced under 20th Century Fox and received acclaim for being faithful to the comics. He made his official debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in the 2024 hit movieDeadpool & Wolverine. Fans loved Reynolds’Deadpool, withDeadpool 3grossing over $1.3 billion worldwide due to its blend of humor, action and meta-commentary. In a recent interview, Reynolds was asked if Deadpool would make an appearance in any of the upcoming MCU films.

InDeadpool & Wolverine, Deadpool wants to become an Avenger. He wants the adventure and to be part of a team. However, Reynolds doesn’t want the anti-hero to be successful in that endeavor. Reynolds sat down with the Times, and the host recounted a previous statement from theRed Noticestar, who said Deadpool works best as a supporting character. Since there are tons of MCU movies coming up, including X-Men, the interviewer wanted to know if he would appear as a supporting character in any of the anticipated films. However, he wasn’t keen on joining them or it will beDeadpool’send. Reynolds said:

If Deadpool becomes an Avenger or an X-Man, we’re at the end. That’s his wish fulfillment, and you can’t give him that.

Reynolds explained that being a supporting act means letting others shine. For instance, he made a way for Wesley Snipes’Bladeto return to the big screen after 20 years, and fans were delighted. Snipes debuted as the half-human, half-vampire hybrid inBlade(1998). He reprises the role inBlade II(2002) andBlade: Trinity(2004).Deadpool & Wolverinepaved the way for Snipes to reprise the role again after 20 years.Deadpool 3enabled Snipes toearn two Guinness World Records. He also brought back Chris Evans as Human Torch, hisFantastic Fourcharacter before he became MCU’s Captain America, Jennifer Garner as Elektra, Dafnee Keen as Laura Kinney (X-23) and gave Channing Tatum a chance to make his big screen debut as Gambit finally.

The originalX-Menare joiningAvengers: Doomsday. Among the confirmed mutants to appear in the upcomingAvengersfilms are Professor X (Patrick Stewart), Magneto (Ian McKellen), Nightcrawler (Alan Cumming), Mystique (Rebecca Romijn) and Cyclops (James Marsden). Deadpool has long-standing ties to the X-Men in the comics. Deadpool’s dark humor fits withX-Men’s dark and mature themes. However, he might not be good at team dynamics because Deadpool is unpredictable and the traditionalX-Menmissions involve strategy and diplomacy.

However, Deadpool is unlikely to fit theAvengerseven if he has some affiliations with them in theUncanny Avengers. His chaotic and R-rated humor does not align with theAvengers' serious tone. However, Deadpool is a skilled mercenary and can be an asset in battle. Despite that, his brutal and irreverent approach is not in congruence with theAvengers' heroic tone. Most importantly,Avengersfilms are usually PG-13, whileDeadpoolthrives in hard R territory. So, it’s unlikely to see Deadpool inAvengers: Doomsday. However, we never say never.
