Despite being a prequel,Red Dead Redemption 2evolved the franchise in a lot of wonderful ways. From the heightened realism to fine-tuning the gameplay of the first chapter,Red Dead Redemption 2is hailed as one of developer Rockstar’s best works. Now that the game is set to turn seven-years-old in 2025, many are eager for Rockstar to announce a third chapter.
AlthoughRDR3isn’t impossible, it’s likely going to be a long wait before Rockstar revisits the Wild West again. Right now,GTA 6is next in line, and as one of the most anticipated video game launches of all time, this game is bound to take up a lot of space before the likes ofRDR3show itself. However, if that day finally comes,RDR3could takeRDR2’s gang camps even further by making them a more dynamic in-game social hub.
RDR3 Could Take the Base Camp to Even Greater Heights
Returning to the gang at the base camp brought an extra level of immersion to the overall story. The base camp made the Van der Linde gang’s operations feel more lifelike, which added tothe experience ofRDR2. The realism ofRDR2continues to present players with a special experience, butRDR3can go even further with this concept.
Instead of just being centered aroundthe Van der Linde gang, or whatever cast of charactersRDR3stars, the base camp can be more of a stopping point between locations where a diverse offering of NPCs gather and stop while journeying across the frontier. Players can run into a revolving lineup of NPCs that have special side quests, items, or weapons that can only be discovered right then and there.
Rockstar’s next project may not even beRDR3. There’s still the possibility of aBullysequel or a return toL.A. Noire, although it’s less likely.
Not only would this add a sense of urgency when coming across NPCs that potentially have rare valuables, but it would make the world feel that much more alive. There would be no promise of running into these characters again, so players would have to really use their time at camps wisely. As great astheRed Dead Redemptionfranchisehas been, there are still plenty of ways to improve and breathe extra life into its western, outlaw-riddled world.
Rockstar being secretive aboutGTA 6’s launch datehas caused a lot of tension in the industry. A lot of publishers and developers have reportedly been holding back announcing launch dates due to the fear of not wanting to release around the same timeframe.GTA 6has the potential to be the biggest video game launch of all time, and when its release finally does arrive, eyes will be pivoting onRed Dead Redemption. AfterGTA 6has settled in, Rockstar hopefully has news about a potentialRDR3waiting in the wings.
As of now,GTA 6will only be launching on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. A PC port has yet to be announced, but it’s expected. Now that the Switch 2 has been announced and is capable of running large games likeCyberpunk 2077, it’s unclear ifGTA 6will be ported to the Nintendo console.
There’s no way to know, of course, but the anticipation is building.BetweenGTAandRed Dead Redemption, Rockstar has two monumental franchises on its hands, and the latter hopefully gets to have the same ongoing legacy that the former does.
