Canada is the latest in a growing list of countries to see its PlayStation Plus subscription prices on the rise. About a week ago,PlayStation Plus prices in Latin Americasaw big jumps of up to 21 percent depending on the service tier. These changes have affected 16 different countries, including Brazil, Mexico, and Argentina. Sony’s leadership has indicated in these cases that the reasons for raising subscription prices were tied to conditions in the global market and an assurance that the company would still be able to afford to offer access to high-quality games for its members.
The rising price of video games can be felt throughout the industry as the cost of developing and producing triple-A-quality games has risen significantly more over the years than the prices players pay for them. This extends beyond streaming services, with the recent announcement thatsome Nintendo Switch 2 games are going to be really expensive, priced at $90 for physical versions and $80 for digital downloads. Additionally, former Sony Computer Entertainment president Shawn Layden has recently gone on the record, saying that game prices should have seen incremental increases over the past several console generations, and the size of price hikes now seems to be picking up the slack for that historical cost stagnation.
