Summary
Like almost every shonen action series, there can be virtually no mention ofOne Piecewithout its primary power system, the Devil Fruits. Touted as one of anime’s most creative power systems,One Piece’sDevil Fruit system, like any other power system, hinges on two principles: compatibility and application. Compatibility relates to character affinity and the ability gained from the chosen Devil Fruit. In contrast, application relates to how creatively expansive the user can be using the ability gained from the Devil Fruit.
For Marines, who are the seaborn military arm of the World Government, Devil Fruits are no more than double-edged swords. Theycan either be great assetsor even more significant hindrances, depending on several factors.
8Jake Jake No Mi (Jacket-Jacket Fruit)
Paramecia-Type Devil Fruit
As its name suggests, the Jake Jake no Mienables its user to become a jacketworn by others. Not only does the user become a jacket human, but the user can also control the wearer’s body and use their abilities. This could mean increased strength and other skills for both the wearer and the human jacket.
However, its liability lies in the fact that the host (wearer) has to be willing and needs another body to activate the ability. This flaw makes it somewhat incompatible with a Marine, as it is of no use in solo combat situations or emergencies that require immediate action without the presence of another person.
7Koro Koro No Mi (Roll-Roll Fruit)
The first non-canon Devil Fruit listed here, the Koro Koro no Mi Devil Fruit grants its user the ability to turn their limbs into train wheels at will, essentially making them a high-speed human train. In addition, the user’s limbs can attach to train tracks, making long-distance travel a breeze for the user. Nevertheless, the ability is flawed when considering its compatibility with a Marine soldier.
Despite being able to move at high speeds, the user cannot brake at will, making it a tricky ability to master. In addition, its effectiveness can be hindered when the terrain is not in the user’s favor — the absence of tracks cuts its effectiveness by almost half. Further, it does not carry any real offensive powers beyond what its user is capable of, making it even easier to counter against and counterproductive for Marines.
6Fuku Fuku No Mi (Garb-Garb Fruit)
The Fuku Fuku no Mi Devil Fruit allows users to create clothes and apparel from leaves or stones through visualization. This ability is helpful for espionage and covert operations due to the ease of creating disguises.
However, like most Paramecia-type Devil Fruits, this ability is also limited by nature and can be severely limited based on the situation. The ability only allows its user to create apparel out of small objects like leaves and stones. Also, the clothes produced are not permanent, as they usually revert when removed. These conditions and the lack of combat or physiology-strengthening attributes make acase for why it would be a liabilityrather than an asset for any Marine in the series.
5Hana Hana No Mi (Flower-Flower Fruit)
Eaten and owned bythe Devil Child, Nico Robin, the Hana Hana no Mi allows its user to sprout any body parts from the surface of any object or living thing and to control the parts remotely. Versatile in its applicability, the Hana Hana no Mi offers its user a good balance of offense and defense while being perfect for multitasking.
However, it is not ideal as it does not grant any boost in physical capabilities, implying that this Devil Fruit is only as strong as its user. Another critical weakness of the fruit is the transfer of damage from sprouted body parts to the user’s genuine body part, which would serve as a limiting factor for Marines.
4Sui Sui No Mi (Swim-Swim Fruit)
Paramecia-Type Fruit
Named after the Japanese onomatopoeia sound for any kind of smooth and fluid movement, the Sui Sui no Mi is a Devil Fruit that grants its user the ability to swim through solid matter as if it were water. In addition, it allows its user to move discreetly from place to place, making it useful for espionage.
However, theSui Sui no Mi is less than idealfor a Marine for many reasons, the first of which is its situation-based uses. Being an extremely situational ability, its uses are limited to particular situations. Restrictive by nature, too, it goes against the versatile nature of Marines, who are trained for nearly all situations. Also, lacking any real combat advantages makes it useless for a Marine to have, as they are typically expected to engage in combat frequently.
3Beri Beri No Mi (Berry-Berry Fruit)
Currently owned by Very Good, the Beri Beri no Mi is a Devil Fruit that enables its users to transform their body parts into berry-like balls that can be used as projectiles. It also makes its users immune to blunt force attacks, similar to the way the Bara Bara no Mi makes its users immune to slashing attacks.
As a more defense-based ability, the Beri Beri no Mi lacks offensive capabilities and islimited to a one-time split once activated, meaning that the user can not split into smaller parts once the ability has been used once. Based on combat practicability and situational application, the Beri Beri no Mi is hardly helpful to a Marine, as it makes its user a walking target while providing next to no real combat advantage.
2Kiro Kiro No Mi (Kilo-Kilo Fruit)
The Kiro Kiro no Mi, better known as the Kilo-kilo Devil Fruit, allows its users to switch their weight at will from 1 to 10,000 kilograms without any physical alteration to the overall size of their body. Another added advantage of the ability is that, regardless of the user’s size, it does not affect the density nor the user’s ability to resist external forces.
Nonetheless, the ability’s combat prowess is shown to be somewhat limited by its current user. It only works in combat under specific preparations: specifically, launching into the air before plummeting with considerable force. Being this limited makes it a bad matchup for a Marine, as its only actual combat application involves plummeting from a high altitude and being able to evade attacks, making it a one-dimensional ability for combat.
1Sube Sube No Mi (Smooth-Smooth Fruit)
The Sube Sube no Mi grants its users the ability to smooth their bodies, making them extremely slippery. It protects its users from most forms of harm, making them immune to attacks caused by weapons, hand-to-hand combat, or any sort of harm that can be caused by solid objects.
However, for all of its defensive capabilities, the ability lacks any offensive advantage unless the user is highly proficient in combat, making it a skill-dependent ability. Such an ability is hardly ideal for a Marine, especially when faced with much more powerful opponents. Despite its proficiency in defense, the inability to apply it on offense in combat would make the ability more of a liability to any Marine.
