Summary
TheOne Piecefranchise wouldn’t have been nearly as successful as it became had it not been for the incredible mystery and allure that surrounds much of the series. With every question regarding the world and its lost history that is answered, Oda raises even more questions that go on to add further depth to the world and create entirely new possibilities for the past as well as the future of where the story could go.
Among the greatest of these mysteries isthe elusive Will of D. At the current moment, no one knows what this concept even is or what it entails for the world, though much of theOne Piecefandom has been debating and theorizing about what it could mean ever since it was first teased. So, let’s go over what it likely means and why there may be two different versions of the Will of D.
One Piece, Chapter 154, “To Alabasta”
Most Important Members
Monkey D. Luffy, Gol D. Roger, Marshall D. Teach, Rocks D. Xebec
Despite being mentioned as early as Chapter 154 of theOne Piecemanga, the entire concept of the Will of D. remains a mystery. However, debates among the fandom are rampant as to what it could truly mean, with the only known detail regarding it being the fact that it is essentially the Inherited Will that is passed down to every member of the D. Clan around the world and thatthe progenitor of this will was most likely Joyboyhimself.
The first person to claim this for themselves was likely Nefeltari D. Lily, who is one of the most interesting characters in the entire setting due to her supposed allegiance to both the 20 ancient kingdoms and Joyboy. Everything regarding the Will of D. is a mystery, but fans have strung together some educated guesses about what it could mean, with the prevailing theory stating that the ‘D’ stands for Dawn, and a member of this clan symbolizes someone who will bring a new dawn to the world.
There is a land where they refer to the ‘Family of D’ as “God’s natural enemy”.
Both Luffy and Roger are seen as the best examples of this, as the most important pirates of their respective eras who were spurred on by their desire to spread freedom to every corner of the world. Knowing the state the world was in and the darkness it was headed towards, Joyboy likely set this entire plan into motion to ensure that someone from his clan who inherited his will would eventually rise up to push back against the evils of the world. This is also the reason why most believe thatJoyboy’s crew were called the Dawn Pirates.
However, there is a brand-new aspect of the Will of D. that has been thrown into the mix. This theory states that, at some point, there was a deviation in the Will of D. which set certain members of the D. Clan down a far darker path. This path was at direct odds with what the ‘Dawn’ was supposed to represent, though it would also seek to topple the corrupt and evil regime of Imu and the Celestial Dragons.
Unlike the other Will of D. that would spread joy and freedom after releasing the world from tyranny, this path would ensure that the members of the D. Clan would rule over everyone else, united under the King of the World. Notably, the only people to have ever wanted this are the only two ‘evil’ members of this fabled clan;Rocks D. Xebec and Marshall D. Teach, which shows how perfectly this theory wraps into everything we already know regarding the Will of D, since the D. would stand for ‘Destruction’.
Essentially, it states that the goals of both versions of this Inherited Will are the same, but the outcome is vastly different. This could also go along with what is known about Sun God Nika since Elbaf revealed that there is a version of the Sun God who is a liberator and another version who is a destroyer. Knowing how Luffy inherited the liberator Sun God Fruit, and thus Joyboy’s will, it’s possible that the other version went to Rocks and Blackbeard, which could explain why Rocks was shown to have visited Elbaf in Chapter 1145.
Why The D. Clan Is The Most Important In The World
The Sheer Importance of the Members
It is clear that the D. Clan is the most important in the entireOne Pieceworld. Ever since the time of Joyboy, members of this elusive group have been at the forefront of the most important events in history, and have somehow always avoided being wiped out by the forces of the World Government despite being considered thenatural enemies of the Celestial Dragons.
Because of this, there is a prevailing theory that the final battle in the entire series will not be against Imu, despite them clearly being built up as the most powerful and most important villain in the world. Since the ‘Destruction’ Will of D. is carried into the modern day by Blackbeard, it would be the perfect last fight of the series to see which version of the Inherited Will is going to come out on top.
One Piececan be streamed onCrunchyroll.
