Summary

Names inOne Piecehave always been an interesting aspect of each character. While not the most subtle, with names often referencing famous pirates or various animals or traits that relate to the character, at the very least, these names are highly recognizable and do a good job of initially defining the building blocks of a character. Even the protagonist, Luffy, was named with no deeper motivation in mind, save for the fact that the name sounded like it suited the character.

Nonetheless, no matter how simple their origin, names have had an important impact on the series at large. Between the mystery of the Will of the D, Sanji’s connections to his family through his last name of Vinsmoke, or even Luffy’s iconic Monkey family line, the names ofOne Piececharacters often come into play heavily in the series. However, when it comes to the Straw Hat Crew, there are a few members that lack any family name, a detail that could prove vital to finding out their origins, and, as was the case with Sanji, could have major ramifications on the story.

Some Of The Straw Hats Have Never Been Given Family Names

This May Be A Style Choice By Oda

Out ofthe entire Straw Hat Crew, many of the members have already been given defined family names. Mainly, Monkey D. Luffy, Vinsmoke Sanji, Nico Robin, Roronora Zoro, Cutty Flam (Franky), and Tony-Tony Chopper - though the last entry was a name given to him by Hiriluk and holds no real significance - have had their family names revealed. Outside of Franky and Chopper, these names have been fairly important to the story, tying the characters to other significant family lines.

I am the great pirate fleet leader, Usopp! - Usopp

However, this leaves the crew members Brook, Jinbe, Nami, andthe Straw Hat sniper, Usopp, without any family names that are currently revealed to call their own. While for Jinbe, not being given a last name makes sense, as many other Fishmen in the series seem to lack a last name, as for the other characters, it seems strange that Oda hasn’t revealed their family names so far. From here, many fans have started speculating on what mysteries the hidden family names of the Straw Hats could hold.

Nami And Brook’s Names May Be Holding Deeper Secrets

Many Fans Think Nami Could Even Be A Princess

Firstly, Nami is the easiest to explain ofthe Straw Hats Pirates, as it’s completely understandable why her family name hasn’t been revealed. Being an orphan who was adopted by Bellamere, it makes sense that her and her sister’s original last names may have been lost to time. However, many fans currently speculate that Nami may be a princess of some kind, something that would be revealed if the audience ever learns her full name.

As for Brook, it seems strange thatthe musician of the Straw Hat Pirateshasn’t revealed his full name to the rest of the crew. Being from a different atime period, Brook may believe that sharing his last name may be unimportant as his family most likely ended with him. Still, if fans ever do learn what happened during Brook’s life before the Rumbar Pirates, it’ll be interesting to see what kind of family life he had, if any.

Usopp’s Lack Of A Family Name Is The Strangest Case

His Father May Reveal More Information Down The Line

Finally, in one of the strangest cases of the series, despite having an emphasis on his biological family for his story, the author ofOne Piece,Oda, has yet to reveal the family name of the Straw Hat sniper, Usopp. Although it seems highly unlikely, it may be possible that Usopp was simply never given a last name, as it was viewed as unimportant by his father, Yasopp. Despite this, many fans believe that the audience may finally learn the secret behind Usopp’s last name when the Straw Hat sniper is reunited with his father, who will then tell the pirate more about his family.

If you think I’m just another cute girl, you’re dead wrong! - Nami

In the end, while names aren’t the most important thing in the world, fans are still curious about the lastnames of these Straw Hat crew members. If these names are eventually revealed at some point in the story, however, it seems likely that they will be tied to some important reveal. Whether this be Nami being revealed as aOne Pieceprincess, or Usopp finally learning more about his family, fans will be happy to finally have some closure on one ofOne Piece’ssimplest mysteries.
