Summary

One Piece’sauthor, Eiichiro Oda, is known to be one of the biggest and the most popular authors in all of history. He’s already the biggest mangaka in Japan, and he even ranks among the best authors worldwide.Oda has achieved all of this with just one manga,One Piece. Usually, Jump authors write multiple stories over the years. When they wrap up a story, they jump on another after a few years, and most big mangaka usually have at least two manga under their belt, although having just one isn’t surprising either.

As fans know, Oda has only had one manga out so far, but he has already admitted that he’d love to draw one particular manga after the end of the story that he is currently writing.

Oda Has Been Working On One Piece For 28 Years Now

One Piece has taken up a massive part of Oda’s life already. The series began serialization in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump in 1997, and since then, it has continued without breaks. One Piece is going strong, with 2025 marking its 28th anniversary, just two shy of 30. One Piece is far from ending, and fans know that the story will still continue for about 6-7 years, at the very least. This series is quite long, but it goes without saying that it is one that’s absolutely worth all the time that anyone would invest in it. Oda has created a masterpiece in One Piece the likes of which can never be recreated, and fans know that they’re witnessing what can arguably be called the greatest story ever told.

The mysteries of this world…I’ll draw them all here! — Oda speaking about the Final Saga of One Piece

That said, Oda’s One Piece wasn’t a successful idea from Day 1. In order for One Piece to be as big as it is today, Oda had to struggle quite a lot. He met failure upon failure for 3 years, and eventually, One Piece broke out. Now, 28 years later, the story isin the Final Sagaand will inevitably end in a matter of years. Of course, fans are wondering what will happen in the future once One Piece does wrap up, and Oda has previously stated that he’s interested in drawing something else too.

Oda Can Incorporate Anything Into One Piece

When it comes to a second manga from Oda, fans might not know that at one point, Oda intended forOne Pieceto only end in 5 years, shocking as that might sound. 28 years later,One Pieceis still going strong, and that’s absolutely ludicrous. At one point,Oda had hoped that he would wrap upOne Piecequickly and then draw another manga, this time focused on robots. Oda’s plans were elaborate, but eventually, he continued One Piece for so long that he realized it wasn’t possible anymore. Here’s what Oda had to say about his second manga:

I have already drawn everything I wanted to draw. I did want to draw robots in the future, but I decided and have already done that in the series. Everything I have ever wanted to draw is already packed into ‘ONE PIECE’, so if I was asked to draw one more time, I would draw ‘ONE PIECE’ again. — Eiichiro Oda

The Implications Of Oda’s Statement About Drawing More One Piece

Oda’s statement is quite sad in one way, but exciting in another. Although Oda cannot draw his robot manga anymore, what fans know is that he will incorporate everything he wants intoOne Piece. The likes of Cyborg Franky could be a direct result of Oda wanting to draw a robot manga. Recently, Oda also introduced an Iron Giant in One Piece from 800 years ago and showcased its relationship with Joy Boy. Undoubtedly, Oda will go on to incorporate all these exciting ideas into One Piece.

More importantly,Oda stated that if he were to ever draw again, he would draw more One Piece. This means if the Jump editors ever felt that they wantedOne Pieceto continue, Oda would make sure to continue with more One Piece. Of course, this doesn’t mean thatOne Piecewon’t end.

It simply means that he will continue with more one-shots and spin-offs, if he feels like it’s the right thing to do.
