Scams taking advantage of gamers are nothing new, and unfortunately, they become more common when an exciting development is on the horizon. In recent months, fans ofElden RingandSilent Hill fhave received fake invites to playteststhat have attempted to take advantage of them by taking over their gaming accounts or stealing their personal information. Now, Nintendo is sharing a warning that something similar is going on with its long-awaited console.
In an official message on one of Nintendo’s social media channels, the company has issued a warning that scams are currently circulating regarding the Nintendo Switch 2. At the moment, these scams seem to be targeting Japanese customers, who have been waiting to find out if they were able to acquire a Nintendo Switch 2 via the lottery for the device in their home country. However, it seems some customers - and even non-customers - have received emails claiming that they’ve won the lottery and need to click through to provide their information so that they can secure their purchase of the system. Unfortunately, the allegedNintendo emails are fake, not only disappointing those who received them, but potentially stealing their info or money, too.
Nintendo Switch 2 Scams Could Go Worldwide
While this particular scam is seemingly limited to those in Japan, it’s highly likely that similar scams will pop up all over the world. TheNintendo Switch 2 has outrageously high demand, so customers may be willing to take chances or not think twice when receiving an email like this one. However, Nintendo notes that at least for its Japanese customers, any notification that someone has gained the right to pre-order the console will not actually contain a link, and instead, users will have to navigate to the site manually. Even for customers ordering from other retailers, the wisest course of action may be to examine any email with scrutiny and to visit the site they placed a pre-order with directly, rather than clicking any links.
Hopes and excitement for the Nintendo Switch 2 are high, but unfortunately, a lot of fans may end up disappointed on launch day. So far, thedemand for the Nintendo Switch 2 has been incredibly high, to the point that a number of retailers struggled when facing the onslaught of customers trying to get their orders in all at once. It likely simply won’t be possible to get the console in everyone’s hands on launch day.
