Summary

When theNintendo Switch 2launches on June 5, it will give players the chance to play the majority of theSuper Mariofranchise on a single system. TheNintendo Switch 2is launching on June 5, and it’s doing so without a brand-newSuper Mariogame at launch. But while there will be no new 2D or 3DSuper Mariogame for the Switch 2 on launch day, Mario will still be featured in one of the launch titles.

In fact, the Switch 2’s flagship launch title isMario Kart World. There is some controversy overMario Kart World’s $80 price tag, but chances are it will be one of the games that nearly everyone that gets a Switch 2 decides to pick up. Those hungry for a more traditionalSuper Marioexperience won’t have a new game to play at launch, but there are plenty of classics playable on the system for fans to check out instead.

Super Mario Games Not Playable on Switch 2 at Launch

There are some caveats to keep in mind when it comes to some of the Switch 2Super Mariogames. For example,Super Mario SunshineandSuper Mario Galaxyare only playable on Switch 2 at launch through theSuper Mario 3D All-Starscollection. We also know thatSuper Mario Sunshineis coming to Nintendo Classicsat some point, though it will not be available at launch.

As far as the main seriesSuper Mariogames that won’t be on Switch 2 at launch, fans will be missing out onNew Super Mario Bros.,New Super Mario Bros. Wii,Super Mario Galaxy 2,Super Mario 3D Land,New Super Mario Bros. 2, the firstMario Makergame, andSuper Mario Run. Nintendo has re-released classic DS games before, so it’s entirely possible that DS titles will come to the Nintendo Classics service as well, opening the door for the originalNew Super Mario Bros.to come to the Switch 2. The 3DS and Wii games may be better off getting remastered, though it’s entirely possible they will get ported as well. The originalMario Makeris arguably made redundant byMario Maker 2, and sinceSuper Mario Runis a mobile game, chances are it will not be coming to the platform.

Nintendo supported the original Switch for a staggering eight years before itrevealed the Switch 2, and so one has to imagine that the new console will have plenty of time to add classic games to its lineup. Here’s hoping that by the end of the Switch 2 generation, all theSuper Mariogames are readily available in one place.
