It’s not clear if NetherRealm’s next game will be anInjusticeorMortal Kombattitle, but oneInjustice 2feature should definitely return. NetherRealm is no stranger to doing some experimenting with its IPs. This can be seen as recently asMortal Kombat 1with the introduction of Invasions and Kameos. However, experimenting will eventually find a success, andInjustice 2found a real winner of an idea with one of its features. In fact, it’s arguably a better version of something last seen inMortal Kombat 1. For NetherRealm’s next project, it’s definitely worth reviving for another round.
While thefuture of theInjusticegamesis still unclear, there’s plenty of reason to think that it could return.Injusticeis the premier DC fighting series from the last gaming generation, even though it has only had two entries thus far. Taking place in an alternate universe where Superman went rogue and became a tyrant,Injusticesees many of the DC universe’s heavy hitters fighting one-on-one with many mechanics similar to those seen inMortal Kombat. With NetherRealm producing both games, the similarities are no surprise.Injustice 2was an excellent game, andInjustice 3could improve even further on its successes.
Injustice 2’s Multiverse Could Be a Source of Inspiration For NetherRealm
Injustice 2’s Multiverse Was an Evolution of Mortal Kombat’s Towers
All things considered, thebest direction for NetherRealm’s next gamelikely involvesInjustice 2’s Multiverse mechanic. In Multiverse mode, players can bring their selected character to several universes, each with a series of fight towers with their own modifications. They even come with short blurbs that help set up the story of each tower. Clearing these fights not only earns experience for the player’s chosen fighter, but also grants credits and unlocks new pieces of gear that provide stats for Multiverse mode in addition to aesthetic changes. WhileInjustice 2’s Multiverse is quite similar toMortal Kombat’s towers, it has plenty of extra personality.
Mortal Kombat 1’s Invasions Wasn’t Quite a Multiverse Successor
Another example of an expansive side mode inMortal Kombat 1’s Invasions mode, but there are several key differences. Rather than a series of towers, Invasions mostly features single battles on a series of maps that the player has to move around. Invasions also take place over the course of seasons that take several months to complete, all primarily themed around a specific character. Multiverse, on the other hand, cycles out new universes at a much quicker pace. Both modes act as a way to unlock new content for players, but Multiverse’s approach arguably gives players more to work with.

Any NetherRealm Game Could Bring Back Multiverse Mode
There’s even reason to expect Multiverse to appear in the nextMortal Kombat, replacingMortal Kombat 1’s Invasions. The story ofMortal Kombat 1features the existence of aMortal Kombatmultiverse, which also forms the basis for Invasions mode as a whole. It’s not hard to imagine aMortal KombatMultiverse mode where Liu Kang or Geras use their magic to let the fighters travel to alternate universes to fight. Plus, sinceInjustice 2already had Multiverse, bringing it back forInjustice 3makes perfect sense as well. No matter what direction NetherRealm goes in next, Multiverse could easily make a comeback.
Multiverse was a great single-player mode that deserves a return appearance. Whether it’sMortal Kombat,Injustice,or aMarvel game from NetherRealm, it would be a shame if it was left out. NetherRealm may have experimented further with Invasions, but Multiverse still feels like a more convenient approach to a similar concept. Not to mention, a newer version could probably include even more elements that weren’t present inInjustice 2’s take on the mode. NetherRealm’s next game is a mystery, but hopefully,Injustice 2’s Multiverse mode can be a part of it.
