Stardew Valleyis no stranger to secrets or difficult to achieve character interactions and cutscenes, and the same can easily be said of the hit indie game’s dialogue. ConcernedApe has made sure thatStardew Valley’s long roster of NPCs have their own hard-to-trigger lines outside the aforementioned rare character interactions.

In the case of quite a fewStardew ValleyEaster eggs, certain interactions or items are uncommon because they require players to complete certain tasks or for the interaction to occur under specific circumstances such as weather, location, time of day, and so forth. There are also many Easter eggs that are hard to stumble across simply because the percentage chance of them even happening is quite low. Most ofStardew Valley’s rare dialogue falls into this second camp, with the chance of seeing this dialogue simply being low regardless of what the player does.

Marnie Holds the Lion’s Share of Rare Dialogue

When choosing “Supplies Shop” in Marnie’s Ranch, the text under her portrait normally reads “Animal supplies for sale!”. However, players have a 0.01% chance of reading “sigh… When the door opened I thought it might be Lewis,” instead. This is a reference to Marnie and Lewis’ seemingly ambiguous romantic relationship. There are signs of both characters in their respective homes, with his lost shorts and brown suspenders present in Marnie’s bedroom and a note signed “-M” hiding in Lewis’ bedroom. Players can even find him hanging out at Marnie’s Ranch, saying, “I’m just here to make sure all of Marnie’s business needs are met.” However, their relationship is finally confirmed during his and Marnie’s 6-heart event, thoughMayor Lewisdoes not want their relationship to be public.

Marnie has yet another line of rare dialogue which happens to be shared with Robin. When entering Robin’s or Marnie’s shop, there is a chance for a dialogue bubble to pop up saying “Lew… Oh…”. This line of dialogue makesperfect sense coming from Marnie, but it may seem odd coming from Robin considering that she is married to Demetrius. There are some other factors to consider, such as Demetrius being her second husband and that Robin and Lewis are the first NPCs to greet the player when they move to Pelican Town. Nevertheless, it is at the very least established that Robin and Lewis have a basic foundation of mutual respect and friendship.

Other Rare NPC Dialogue in Stardew Valley

Pierre’s shopalso features rare dialogue. When entering the General Store, there is a chance for Pierre to say “Did you remember your wallet?”. Gus has a similarly rare line when players enter the Stardrop Saloon, telling players “You look like you need a drink.” These lines contrast from Marnie and Robin’s, as they directly relate to their businesses and the player, rather than adding any overarching lore to speculate on.

Gunther has another rare line of dialogue worth mentioning. When entering the Museum, there is a chance for him to say “You smell like dirt… good!”. Considering thatGunther works with not only rare artifacts, but also minerals, it makes perfect sense that he would be excited to smell something earthy. Hopefully players have something new to add to the Museum’s ever-growing collection. To be fair, the player likely always smells like dirt considering thatStardew Valleyis a farming simulator, but this line from Gunther is still a fun one. These are likely only some ofStardew Valley’s rare lines of dialogue that have been uncovered, but more will hopefully be added to the hit indie game in future updates.
