Quil Grootsland is likely the first fail-safe character players encounter, stepping in for fan-favorite Alfira. Her fate is among the saddest in the Dark Urge path, making it one of thecruelest things a Dark Urge player will encounterduring their playthrough.
Quil Grootsland is a character only those playing as the Dark Urge can encounter. Quil is a dragonborn minstrel who approaches the player’s camp one night seeking shelter. Young, naive, but ever so optimistic, Quil is very grateful to find a place of respite after getting robbed of her items. Although a sweet camp follower, she does not remain with the crew for long. However, if players gotQuil instead of Alfira visiting their camp, they were likely avoiding this fate for the beloved tiefling bard.
Rare Baldur’s Gate 3 NPCs – Asharak
Most players are able to meet Asharak as someone who deeply cares for the tiefling children. However, most players will never meet him as the leader of the tiefling camp. If, for any reason,Zevlor is unavailableto take the helm of the tiefling leadership, Asharak will step in for him as a replacement. If Zevlor is alive and well, Asharak will happily remain a combat and weapons trainer for the little ones at the Druid Grove. He can be found where players can recruit Wyll to their party.

Cerys is a tiefling character that players venturing intoBG3’s spooky Act 2 will meet at the Last Light Inn. However, players with playthroughs where both Zevlor and Asharak meet an early end have the chance to meet Cerys a little earlier than originally planned. Cerys will step up to the plate as the leader of the tieflings seeking shelter at the Druid Grove if both Option A and Option B are unavailable. With two characters to step up to his plate and a tough rescue,Zevlor can’t catch a break.
Rare Baldur’s Gate 3 NPCs – Boss Friol
Roah Moonglowand Boss Friol represent two sides ofBaldur’s Gate 3’s intricate world-building, each playing key roles in the evolving power struggles of the Lower City. Roah, a Zhentarim trader with a ruthless business sense, is an opportunist who survives by aligning herself with whoever offers the greatest profit. Players first meet her in the Goblin Camp, where she seeks to profit off the Absolute’s growing influence, and she continues to resurface in later acts, making shady deals and scheming for control of the Guild. However, if Roah dies before Act Three, Boss Friol takes her place.
Friol, in contrast, is immediately hostile to the party, found conspiring as soon as players meet her. While Roah plays a long game of shifting allegiances, Friol is a direct aggressor, aiming to take over the Guild with brute force. Her presence ensures that, even in Roah’s absence, theZhentarim’s planscontinue to unfold. However, because many players keep Roah alive for her valuable trades, Friol is an NPC that most will never meet unless they choose or accidentally stumble into a more violent path.
Rare Baldur’s Gate 3 NPCs – Zae
With the right sequence of choices, players can experience a fan-favorite highlight of Act 1: the tiefling party. As a token of gratitude, thetieflings will arrive at the Wilderness campand throw players a party they will never forget. Yet, if somehow the tieflings meet an early end, there are fail-safes to replace them at the party. Although there are several other characters who take the place of OG tiefling refugees, Zae stands out among them because of her party time request and attitude. If Zae makes it to the tiefling party, she will sport a green dress and a cheerful demeanor, drunkenly inviting the player to dance with her. The player, if moved by her charm, may opt to show her a few of their own moves.

Gerson is perhaps the rarest character to encounter inBaldur’s Gate 3, as he only appears under excruciatingly specific circumstances. Players get to meet Gerson if they have wiped out the goblin camp of all its leaders in Act 1 while also leaving at least one party member back at theDruid Grove. Gerson will come to the player after the battles have been won, announcing that the threats have been neutralized. A common theory as to why Gerson even exists is to maintain player immersion during a plot-critical transition.
