Summary

Build a Rocket Boy’s upcoming action-adventure game,MindsEye, might haveGrand Theft AutoandCyberpunk 2077written all over its world, but its namesake may actually end up triggering some gameplay sequences that are similar to Respawn Entertainment’sStar Wars Jediseries. InMindsEye, the MindsEye is a neural implant embedded in the brain of Jacob Diaz, the game’s protagonist, and, as expected, it plays a central role in the game’s unfolding narrative. Diaz, a former special-ops soldier, is haunted by fragmented memories triggered by the MindsEye, which lead him on a journey to uncover the truth of his past and a potential conspiracy driven by corporate greed.

This is ultimately whereMindsEye’s comparisons toStar Wars Jedicome in, although they are currently only speculative in nature. It is clear that the MindsEye is central to the narrative, both because of what has been confirmed about it and the fact that the game is named after it. However, the MindsEye might play a more significant role in gameplay as well, and it has the potential to drive Jacob’s growth forward in a similar way toCal’s growth in theStar Wars Jediseries. Of course, this growth will undoubtedly be personal for Jacob inMindsEye, but it could also manifest in the form of new skills and abilities he had previously forgotten.

MindsEye’s Namesake Might Echo Star Wars Jedi’s Progression System

Cal’s Memories Move Him Forward in the Star Wars Jedi Series

TheStar Wars Jediseries could have had protagonist Cal Kestis level up in a traditional way, but it instead opted for something more story-driven and reflective of his growth as a Jedi. At the start ofStar Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, Cal is emotionally disconnected from the Force after the trauma of Order 66. As players progress through the story, Cal relearns the Force abilities he once knew, not through grinding or purchasing upgrades, but by reliving flashbacks to his training withMaster Jaro Tapal.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivorplaced less of an emphasis on flashback-driven progression, but it was still present.

Ultimately, this results in sequences that are more than just tutorials, as they tie Cal’s personal and emotional growth as a Jedi directly to the game’s progression, thereby strengthening the bond that players may form with Cal on his road to rediscovering his purpose. Additionally, through psychometry, Cal can experience echoes of past events when he touches objects or visits certain locations. While these moments don’t grant him any new skills, they do provide lore, backstory, and worldbuilding details, all while reinforcingCal’s connection to the Forceand the Jedi who came before him.

Jacob Diaz’s Neural Implant in MindsEye Could Play a Major Role in His Growth

At this point, not much information has been given about the full extent of the MindsEye’s function inMindsEye, but given what has been disclosed, it’s reasonable to believe that Jacob’sskill progressionmight play out in a similar way to Cal’s inStar Wars Jedi. According toMindsEye’s official description, players will play as “Jacob Diaz, a former special-ops soldier haunted by fragmented memories from his MindsEye neural implant.” It can be assumed, then, that these “fragmented memories” will gradually reveal themselves to Jacob, perhaps when he encounters certain triggers.

At the very least, the MindsEye will be central to the game’s story, and that much is almost certain givenMindsEye’s title. It would be a shame, though, for it to neglect utilizing the same flashback-driven progression that definedCal’s journey in theStar Wars Jediseries, as it would offer players a chance to connect more emotionally toMindsEye’s protagonist. If nothing else, players are likely in for a bit of a thriller withMindsEye’s story — one whose mysteries will gradually be revealed, stretching toward a big climax.
