With only about three months left untilSupermanhits theatres, the hype rollout is revving into full gear. CinemaCon is happening this week, and Warner Bros. felt the need to show off some footage from the new superhero film that is set to kick off the retooled DC Universe proper. Now, it has been put online.
Rebooting both theSupermanfilm franchise (again) and the DC Films connected universe (now simply called the DC Universe or DCU) in one fell swoop, the upcoming blockbuster needs to be a smash hitfor Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Studios.Supermanis set to officially kick off “Chapter One” of the newly branded DCU, a phase of films and television shows with the subtitle of “Gods and Monsters.” With unproven characters like Supergirl, Clayface, and Swamp Thing heading up the majority of other Chapter One movies, it’s clear the Man of Steel is carrying the heavy burden for the DCU until Andy Muschietti’s Batman flick—The Brave and the Bold—manages to get off the ground. DC Studios co-chairman and co-CEO James Gunn is taking the project very seriously, as evidenced by his decision to write, produce, and directSupermanhimself.
Earlier on in the week, during CinemaCon, James Gunn and company released a so-called “Sneak Peek” atSuperman, showing just under four minutes of new footage to an excited crowd in Las Vegas. Those in attendance described the footage as featuring plenty of Krypto the Superdog and providing a glimpse inside the Fortress of Solitude. Now,DC Studios has released the footage onlinejust ahead of Disney’s big CinemaCon panel (a cheeky move, Mr. Gunn).
The Superman Sneak Peek Features A Familiar Voice As Robot 4
The Sneak Peek footage begins nearly identically tothe first teaser trailer. Superman crash-lands in a snowy wasteland and whistles for Krypto to help him. In the Sneak Peek, viewers get more of a taste of Superman and Krypto’s relationship. Upon being summoned, Krypto wants nothing more than to play with Kal-El, but Superman is obviously in bad shape. Krypto doesn’t quite grasp that Supes isn’t in the mood for games and plays a bit rough with his heroic owner.
Eventually, Superman gets Krypto to take him “home” to the Fortress of Solitude, where multiple Kryptonian robots are waiting to tend to Superman’s ailments. One of the robots—Robot 4, to be exact—isclearly voiced by character-acting legend Alan Tudyk. If you’re going to get an actor to voice a robot, you might as well get the guy who voiced Sonny inI, Robot, K-2SO inRogue One: A Star Wars Story, and Cosmo inThe Electric State… the man has a talent for voicing robots.
Upon discovering that Superman has suffered numerous broken bones and damage to several vital organs, the robots decide to give a healthy, concentrated dose of sunlight to the hero. While it will undoubtedly fix his ailments, the pain of the repairs is apparent from David Corenswet’s gutteral screams. The Sneak Peek then goes on to showcase clips that were used in thepreviously released teaser trailer.
All in all, things are looking up forSupermanas the general public is seemingly getting pumped to see the Man of Steel back in action. Here’s hoping the DCU gets off on the right foot and gives Marvel a real run for their money.
