Anyone who has followedHollow Knight: Silksong’s development knows just how agonizing the wait for the game has been. Despite being in the works for what feels like ages, the upcoming sequel to 2017’sHollow Knightdoesn’t have a release date yet or even a proper new gameplay trailer. To make matters worse, the three-person group of developers behindHollow Knight: Silksong, Team Cherry, have been reluctant to share a smidge of new information on their upcoming game. The overall lack of communication from Team Cherry has sent theHollow Knightcommunity into a frenzy over the last few years.
Up until recently, manyHollow Knightfans were starting to lose hope in Team Cherry andHollow Knight: Silksong’s release. Some players unironically began to believe thatSilksongwas in development hell and had become nothing more than vaporware, much like Ubisoft’sBeyond Good & Evil 2. However, after the recent Nintendo Switch 2 Direct, the outlook surrounding the game’s release became a lot more positive. During a sizzle reel of upcoming third-party games at the event, Nintendo showcaseda few seconds ofHollow Knight: Silksonggameplay footageand confirmed that it would come out in 2025. This news unsurprisingly took the internet by storm, and it became one of the most talked-about subjects of the Direct.

The fact that something as minor as a brief gameplay snippet was able to get theHollow Knightfan base this riled up is a testament to how disorganized and inconsistentSilksong’s marketing cyclehas been so far. Indeed, looking back at the last 5 or so years, it seems unusual that it’s taken this long for Team Cherry to provide updates on the game.Hollow Knight: Silksongwas initially announced for Windows, Mac, Linux, and Nintendo Switch on June 11, 2025, the same time as Valentine’s Day. Team Cherry dropped a reveal trailer for the game, alongside a 20-minute developer deep dive video, on its official YouTube channel that day.
Unlike subsequent years, the remainder of 2019 was packed withSilksong-related news. Hollow Knight: Silksong Was Scheduled to Launch in 2023, But It Was Delayed
After 2019 came to a close, Team Cherry went almost completely silent onHollow Knight: Silksongin the ensuing months. The studio didn’t share a lot of information about the game (though it did reveal some details inEdgeMagazine Issue #354) until the June 2022 Xbox Games Showcase, which took place several years later. At Xbox’s presentation, Team Cherry dropped the second trailer forSilksong. The company confirmed that it would not only be released on Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S, but thatit would also launch on Xbox Game Passon day one. At the time, Team Cherry and Microsoft claimed thatSilksongwould be released sometime in the first half of 2023, though that never came to pass.
As the days went by, very little news aboutHollow Knight: Silksongpopped up, outside of a brief PlayStation port announcement in September 2022. Eventually, though, on July 20, 2025, a representative from Team Cherry confirmed thatthe game would be delayed to an unspecified date, beyond its planned 2023 release window. Aside from a few minor updates, that was the last time Team Cherry provided any substantial details onSilksong’s development; that is, until the recent Nintendo Switch 2 Direct. SinceHollow Knight: Silksongis currently slated to launch across all platforms in 2025, however, fans will hopefully not have to wait too long for another update on the game.
