McCreary is a reasonably prolific composer in movies and television, having worked onBattlestar Galactica,Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., andThe Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. For many fans, Bear McCreary’s music helped give the Norse-themedGod of Wargames an epic and emotional feel, with booming vocals and intense instrumentals that captured the fury of Kratos while reflecting on his growth into a wiser, more insightful person who wants to do better by his son, Atreus.God of War Ragnarok’s soundtrack would winBest Score and Music at The Game Awards 2022, with McCreary himself performing the track “Blood Upon the Snow” live alongside Irish folk artist Hozier at the event. McCreary also made a cameo inRagnarokas a Dwarven musician named Raeb.
McCreary recently spoke withVGCas part of an upcoming podcast celebrating the20th anniversary ofGod of War. The composer mentioned how he had just visited theGod of War20th Anniversary Retrospective Gallery alongside other artists who worked on the series, and noted how his score for theGod of War Ragnarok: ValhallaDLC brought a sense of “closure” to both Kratos’s arc and his own time with the franchise. “I feel like my contribution, starting with E3 2016 all the way through to Valhalla, feels complete. I feel complete. I feel like I told a story,” he explained.
Bear McCreary Feels His Work on God of War Is ‘Complete’
That being said, McCreary didn’t rule out thepossibility of returning toGod of Warfor the upcoming live-action Amazon TV series, saying that the producers “got his number” if they are interested in having him work on the show’s music. According to showrunner Ronald Moore (who McCreary has already worked with onBattlestar Galactica), Amazon has already ordered two seasons of theGod of Warseries, meaning there would be plenty of work for McCreary should he get involved.
It brings a sort of closure to Kratos’ arc, so I feel like my contribution, starting with E3 2016 all the way through to Valhalla, feels complete. I feel complete. I feel like I told a story.
In the meantime, Sony is releasing a 13-disc limited-edition vinyl set featuring music from theentireGod of Warfranchise, including McCreary’s work on Kratos’s recent two-part Norse saga. This is just part of Sony’s plan to celebrate the 20th anniversary ofGod of War, and rumors suggest that a new game featuring Kratos in the original Greek setting could be on the way. However, fans might not get an official confirmation of this anytime soon, as Santa Monica Studio says there are no new announcements planned for theGod of Waranniversary celebration.
