Coming hot off the heels of the surprise success that wasHelldivers 2, Sony President Hiroki Totoki stated in February 2024 that while “major projects” were in the works, Sony wouldn’t be releasing any new installments of pre-established first-party franchises until its next fiscal year, which wouldn’t begin until March 2025. Though first-party titles likeGhost of Yoteiwere announced last year,Sony stayed true to its word, mostly.

There have been no new installments in pre-established PlayStation first-party franchises, aside fromAstro Bot, since February 2024. That dry spell could be coming to an end, with two first-party releases on the horizon. But ifGhost of Yotei’s recently leaked release date turns out to be true, then it could leave another big gap in Sony’s upcoming slate.

PlayStation’s 2025 Release Slate Could Have a Big Gap to Fill

Death Stranding 2 Marks The Start of PlayStation’s 2025 First-Party Slate

Finally given a release date just a few weeks ago,Death Stranding 2: On the Beachis set to launch on June 12, 2025. This will markthe first PlayStation first-party release sinceConcord, and the first new installment of a pre-established franchise sinceHelldivers 2. As things currently stand,Death Stranding 2is the only PlayStation first-party game with a concrete release date.

Ghost of Yotei Could Come Soon After

But if recent rumors are to be believed, thenGhost of Yoteicould be joiningDeath Stranding 2much sooner than fans expected. A few days ago, DetectiveSeeds took to Twitter to claim that they’d heard potential release dates forGhost of Yoteifrom two different sources. One source (who’s said to have “missed a bit” in the past) saidGhost of Yoteiwill release in mid to late August, while the other (who has been “spot on” with past information) said it should release in mid to late July.

DetectiveSeeds said that they believe the truth lies somewhere in the middle, which would putGhost of Yotei’s release date somewhere between late July and early August.

The Rest of PlayStation’s Year Is Currently Unclear

AfterGhost of Yotei, there’s no otherPlayStation first-party gameconfirmed to have a 2025 release window. This means that, ifGhost of Yotei’s leaked release date comes to fruition, then PlayStation could have at least four months of the year left to fill.

It’s possible that one of PlayStation’s in-development titles without a concrete release date could get one and be released by the end of the year.Marvel’s Wolverineand Bungie’sMarathonare probably the most likely contenders for this possible outcome, withFairgamesbeing reportedly delayed internally and now being on track for a 2026 release, and Naughty Dog’sIntergalactic: The Heretic Prophetstill being at least two years out, according to industry insider Jason Schreier.

It’s also possible that a first-party PlayStation game could come out of the blue and fill that gap later in the year. TheGod of Warfranchise has been the subject of a few different rumors and leaks in recent months. Some suggest an Ancient Egypt-themed game is in the works, some suggest an Atreus-led spinoff could still be happening, and the latest rumors claim thata newGod of WarGreek saga gameis coming, potentially being preceded by a remastered collection of the originalGod of Wargames. None of these potential projects have been confirmed by Santa Monica or Sony, but it’s possible (albeit not likely) that one of these will be announced and released by the end of 2025.
