Summary

Anime can be hilarious, and there are some shows that prove this with incredible ease. That said, the real gems are usually those that feature characters who can carry the comedy of a show with their antics, dialogue, or just all-round personality.

These characters often help to make comedy anime memorable, and they are the ones who will usually assist in helping a show be considered amongthe best comedy anime. The realm of anime is home to countless hilarious figures, but these particular examples are arguably among thefunniest comedy anime charactersout there.

my-next-life-as-a-villainess-1.jpg

Katarina Claes is a character who issupposed to be a villainess, but upon recovering her memories of being a Japanese schoolgirl, her personality changes. She’s kind, charismatic, and willing to help anyone. However, she is also very simple-minded.

This simple-mindedness is the reason why she is such a funny character to watch. There are many of such, but somehow, the way Katarina plays it makes it incredibly hilarious. She misreads situations, says the most incredible things with little to no shame, and has a facial expression that goes really well with all she does. Her antics have earned her the nickname ‘Bakarina.’

Hinamatsuri

Hina is from an advanced civilization and comes to earth to live with Nitta. She has powerful telekinetic abilities and is the main character from the comedy anime,Hinamatsuri. Hina gets into all sorts of trouble, which she typically handles with a straight face.

Hina is lazy,a bit of an air-headand is incapable of reading the room. Her inability to comprehend results in her being very funny to watch on screen, going through life with the most carefree nature. Her interactions with her classmates like Hitomi and colleagues like Anzu also make for hilarious comedic sequences.

Asobi Asobase

Asobi Asobaseisan absurd comedy about three highschool girlsand the antics they get up to in school. All three girls are hilarious, from Olivia’s inability to speak English to Kasumi’s weird misconceptions about men.

That said, Hanako is the character who takes the cake. She is impulsive and a true hater. Watching her hate on popular girls and her negative outlook on people who are seemingly happy in relationships is truly quite amusing. Her fast-talking, energetic personality gels really well with the other girls, too, and the three form an excellent comedic trio.

gintama-2005.jpg

Gintamais one of the funniest anime ever made, and every character in the show could pass for the funniest. In Kotarou Katsura, the leader of a faction of the Jouishishi, there is a character who will catch many new to the show by surprise.

Kotarou is a genius, but he is also incredibly silly. Unlike many of the characters inGintamawith exaggerated faces when they say or do something stupid, Kotarou remains unfazed. This balances out the rest of the cast and really makes him an entertaining character to watch.

konosuba-god-s-blessing-on-this-wonderful-world-2016.jpg

Konosubais chock-full of funny characters, especially the main cast of Kazuma, Megumi, Aqua, and Darkness. Every single one of them could be the funniest, but something about Aqua makes her decidedly the most hilarious of the bunch.

She is a goddess, and she is the first to show the absurdity of the show with her behavior after Kazuma first comes to her. Her voice acting is incredible, and when she shouts or cries, it can be side-splitting. Aqua is incredibly useless, and the more she sinks in to the viewer, the funnier she gets.

kaguya-sama-love-is-war.jpg

Many will still rememberthe iconic ending songfor the first season ofKaguya-sama: Love is Warand how that catapulted Chika to stardom within the anime fandom. That said, she is a lot more than just a cute character and is a major part of the comedy inKaguya-sama.

Her reactions are usually what makes her so funny, as she gets really flustered when between Kaguya and Miyuki. She is also terrified of Miyuki’s singing, and every time the two had an episode that focused on them, it was always comedy gold.

Spy X Family anime series poster

Spy x Familyfeatures a great cast, but they all revolve around Anya Forger, and she proves to be a worthy ‘sun’ for them to revolve around. Anya has psychic powers and is able to read minds. This leads to a lot of the show’s comedy, as she would do anything to not return to the orphanage.

The mixture between Anya’s immaturity, overactive imagination, and crazy ideas all come together to make her a compelling character. She is able to play out the more ridiculous aspects of the show, and when it is time to show heart, she is also right there.

Riki Nendou is a friend of Saiki and usually calls him ‘partner.’ Nendou is another example ofthe ‘dumb’ character archetype. That said, it is a funny archetype, especially when done well, and Nendou proves to be an incredible example of this.

Nendou is funny for a number of reasons. For one, his appearance is already pretty humorous, with his hair and his exaggerated chin being pretty hard to ignore. Then, he also has the whole straight-faced thing where he acts out the most absurd things with little expressiveness. He is usually played for laughs, and a lot of his antics are the vehicle through which Saiki K. delivers humor.

Reigen is a conman, but he is also many people’s favorite character fromMob Psycho 100. Yes,he effectively scams Moband uses his powers to advance himself and his business, but he is also earnest and is always willing to help his ‘student’ in a pinch.

Reigen uses the most outlandish methods to scam his clients, and these tend to be really funny. When it is time to get serious, though, Reigen is also dependable, and his growth throughout the series was one of the best things about it.

Sakamoto is a perfect character who does all things well. The entire premise of the series centers around how various classmates, bullies, and so on try to get Sakamoto to look bad, but he somehow always turns it around to make himself look cool.

There are perfect characters in anime, but they aren’t typically funny, yet Sakamoto is able to use his perfection for humor. How he handles situations and his deadpan expression all play into his hilarity as a character. It’s unfortunate that there has only been one season of his show, as fans would likely have been able to enjoy many more laughs with this character if he had more screen time.
