Dragon Ball Superis still on hiatus, but there is reason to believe that it will soon return to start one of the most anticipated arcs of all time, the so-called Black Frieza Saga, where we will see one ofDragon Ball’s best villainsback in his strongest form ever.
While fans may still have to wait for news on the series, Black Frieza is probably the only character that can get the audience hyped up once again when the series returns. But why does this arc have so much potential?
Who Is Black Frieza in Dragon Ball Super?
Black Frieza is the character’smost powerful known transformation, introduced in the series during the Granolah arc. He achieved this form by training in a Hyperbolic Time Chamber for 10 years (or what would be 10 years, as time flows differently in these chambers).
He killed Awakened Gas on the Cereal Planet, who was the most powerful enemy Vegeta and Goku had fought so far in the story. However, the full extent of Black Frieza’s power is still unknown — according to the magazine in whichDBSis published,V-JUMP, his powers are so enormous that they can’t even be measured.
Why Is Frieza’s “Ultimate Transformation” Black?
Many fans found it strange that Frieza’s most powerful form (at least so far, who knows) is black (platinum or diamond would make more sense to some). Toyotaro once commented that this is because black is the only color that can be above gold — as an example, he mentioned that black credit cards are generally “above” gold credit cards. Nonetheless, Frieza could still later reach Platinum or Diamond forms (or even another form more powerful than Black).
Will The Next Dragon Ball Super Arc Be About Black Frieza?
So far, Toyotaro hasn’t confirmed any information about the next saga; he only confirmed that a new arc is coming. However, Black Frieza wasfeatured on the back cover of the latest volume, and Toyotaro briefly suggested that he will drop more information about this character soon.
With the Super Hero Saga finally concluded, fans are eager to learn who the next enemy will be. Toyotaro released an illustration of Black Frieza during the Jump Festa ‘25 (held in December 2024) and now he teases him once again. Sincenot much is known about Black Frieza, fans are getting more and more excited about the prospect of a Black Frieza Saga, when we will finally see him in his full power in this new form.
Black Frieza would then be perfect to give the characters a challenging enemy that could even force the Dragon Team to unlock even more powerful forms — which would likely require everyone to work together to defeat him. Furthermore, it would finally end the hiatus in grand style.
However, some fans believe that the Black Frieza Saga should be the final one — so, if the manga returns with this arc, many would speculate thatDBSisreaching its final climax. While it makes sense that such a strong enemy would be the final one,Dragon Ball Supercould continue after Black Frieza (but itcould be a letdown for many fans).
When Is Dragon Ball Super Returning From Hiatus?
Unfortunately, there is no information aboutDragon Ball Superreturning in the near future. Some fans speculate that it could return this month, but honestly, that seems highly unlikely. Thankfully,Toyotaro has at least assured that the manga has not been canceled. Maybe the next issue ofV-JUMPwill bring more information about the series.
