The pair also confirmed this iteration of the iconic serial killer with a code is set to continue indefinitely as opposed to the limited series,New Blood.
The original plan was to end Dexter’s story with his death at the hands of his teenage son, Harrison, inNew Blood, but the show became Showtime’s biggest ever hit, and when the merger with Paramount was confirmed, it became inevitable that Dexter would be making a return. However,it wasMichael C. Hallwho set the wheels in motion when he expressed his desire to undo Dexter’s ending,and Phillips formed a writer’s room to figure out a way back for the character.

Hall’s iconic serial killer with a code is officially coming back with a vengeance in the new sequel series,Dexter: Resurrection, and fans have been teased with some exclusive photos ahead of its release this summer.The fact thatDexter is actually aliveis a miracle that can only be explained by its lead star.In an exclusive interview withVanity Fair,Michael C. Hall stated:
We thought it would be the end, but he’s a remarkably resilient guy, so the possibility was always at least for me percolating.
Fans had been speculating about how Dexter’s survival would be explained, but they didn’t have to wait forResurrection’s premiere, because the prequel series,Original Sin, began with a flash forwardto show the titular serial killer surviving his injuries in hospital. This set the scene for Dexter’s return, but the main plot ofResurrectionremains shrouded in mystery, except for a few tidbits of information.Clyde Phillips revealed a potential reconciliation between Dexter and Harrison in the same interview with Vanity Fair:
Dexter has a lot of hesitation about making contact, which is a fundamental part of the tension that is pervasive for the first bit of the season. Harrison revealed himself to be, and remains, an all-the-more potent connection to Dexter’s tiny sense of humanity. He craves it, in spite of himself, so it’s a major bolt of thread running through his interior life and the life of the season. Dexter finds Harrison fairly quickly, then he asks Harry, “Do I reveal myself to him? Is it going to screw him up to have a zombie dad? Dexter is determined to make sure that he has a solid, and more importantly, honest and loving relationship with his son.
First Look Images Of Dexter: Resurrection Newcomers Uma Thurman And Peter Dinklage Have Also Been Released
Dexter: Resurrectionhas attracted a lot of big names to the cast, including major movie stars Uma Thurman and Peter Dinklage, and their characters have also been teased in first-look images.Thurman will play the head of security to Dinklage’s billionaire venture capitalist, Leon Prater. It’s not clear how they will fit into Dexter’s story, but the chances of them ending up on his kill table are significantly high based on previous events. Phillips revealed what it was like to have a movie star like Uma Thurman in the new sequel series:
When Uma first came to the set, the whole set changed. In walks this movie star, and she has presence.But nobody gets a call sheet like this, particularly on a TV show. I guess it shows that we’re more than just a TV show. People want to work with Michael.
John Lithgow’s Trinity Killeris confirmed to guest star inResurrection, while David Zayas returns as a series regular, with Angel Batista on the hunt for his old Miami Metro colleague.Also joining the cast in guest roles areHow I Met Your Motherstar, Neil Patrick Harris,Sopranosicon, Steve Shirripa,Marvel hero, Krysten Ritter, Eric Stonestreet and David Dastmalchian.Michael C. The character was severely traumatized by a lot of what happened to him in the original incarnation, and is only now at a place where he’s able to shed that. Spending time with that [Original Sin] material helped embroider and color in what was maybe a line drawing or an outline that I had in my mind from the beginning—so it’s a tool for us.
No official release date has been revealed forDexter: Resurrectionjust yet, but it’ll be heading to Paramount + with Showtime sometime this summer.
