Dead by Daylight’s Blood Moon event has proven that the game can grow in plenty of interesting directions in the future. While far from the first event thatDead by Daylighthas seen, 2025’s Blood Moon shook up the trials in a way that the developers should take note of. A lot of live-service games can benefit from evolving, andDead by Daylightis no exception. With this latest event, there is now a clear blueprint that can be used for future developments. The main question is how else the developers can follow this plan in the future.
The latestupdate toDead by Daylightbrought about the Blood Moon event in addition to the usual list of adjustments and bugfixes. However, this was not the first time thatDead by Daylighthad featured the Blood Moon. 2024 saw an in-game event with the same name, although that version of the event was far different. 2024’s Blood Moon saw the introduction of Blood Basins, which let players collect droplets to create Blood Zones to grant themselves temporary advantages. Clearly, the development team wanted to bring back the Blood Moon event. However, its second occurrence is a far different experience from the first.
In 2025’s version ofDead by Daylight’s Blood Moon event, a new mechanic was introduced in the form of blood generators. Blood generators replace 4 of the generators that would normally spawn on the map, and can only progress by being filled with blood cans from blood pumps that will also spawn on the map. While these generators get repaired faster than normal gens, the requirement to bring blood cans to them leaves a vital opportunity for the Killer to intercept the Survivors. Blood Generators are something wholly unique to Blood Moon, and a big part of what makes the event so notable.
What separates Blood Moon from previous events likeDead by Daylight’s Chaos Shuffleis how it changes the objectives. Past events shuffled the formula, like Chaos Shuffle giving everyone randomized perks, 2v8 featuring 2 Killers and 8 Survivors, or Lights Out making maps extremely dark. However, in those modes, the end goal of powering the generators was always the same. Blood Moon’s blood generators completely change one of the game’s core mechanics. Survivors actually need to change up their usual strategy in order to win trials in Blood Moon mode. It’s the biggest change that any event has made toDead by Daylight’s formula.
While 2v8 featured cages instead of hooks, they were mechanically similar to the cages Pyramid Head uses with his power.
Blood Moon and its generators makes a fantastic case forfuture events inDead by Daylightto provide more meaningful changes. By changing up the goals of the trial, these events will not only give players an extra challenge, but the events themselves will be more exciting. Breaking up the usual formula every once in a while could be good for the overall health of the game. When events make players challenge themselves in new ways, it makes them a lot more memorable. Blood Moon changing the generators themselves is a major example, so Behaviour should be open to future events modifying the players' objectives.
Dead by Daylighthas an excellent opportunity in the wake of its Blood Moon event. The generalrules ofDead by Daylightmay be updated as new perks and Killers come along, but the end goal has always been the same. Blood Moon’s blood generators marked a significant change in formula. Switching up the primary objectives for Survivors and Killers in future events is definitely worth exploring again, possibly with even more dramatic changes. After Blood Moon,Dead by Daylighthas more future options than ever.
