Introduced alongside theKhans of the SteppeDLC but available for free to allCrusader Kings 3players is the ability to formdefensive pacts known as Confederations. While only available to some rulers of lower tiers, they can be great forfending off looming threatson the Steppe or other regions of the map.

What Are Confederations In Crusader Kings 3?

Confederations inCrusader Kings 3are essentiallydefensive alliances, typically formed between those of similar cultures and power. Members of a Confederationcannot wage war or raid one another, and they will automaticallyjoin each other’s defensive wars.

In other words, if one member isattacked by a foreign power,all will come to their defense.

Nomads will also gain some Fertilitybonuses as part of a Confederation, meaning they can stay put longer before needing to migrate.

Options As Part Of A Confederation

The leader of a Confederation can eventually take theElevate Confederation decisiontobecome a King or Queenand convert their fellow Confederatesinto vassals.Many requirementsmust be met, however.

Alternatively, players mayelect to leavethe Confederation at any time, using theAbandon Confederation decision.

The defensive pacts cannot be made by anyone, and the following requirements must be met:

Forming A Confederation & Inviting Allies To Join

When players are eligible to form a Confederation, they should have apurple notificationat the top of the screen, unless it has been disabled. They can also head to theDecisions taband selectCall for Confederation​​​​​​.

Upon taking this decision, a Confederation won’t be made yet, but it grants playersthe ability to ask neighboring rulers to join a Confederation. Look for fully independent rulers of low title tiers who aren’t at war.

Look in the Situation notifications at the top to see if any rulers can be convinced to join a Confederation.

Whenright-clicking on them, players should seeOffer Confederationamong the Diplomacy options. This may be grayed out if they are ineligible. Alternatively, it may have a red cross if there is no current way for them to be convinced. Others may be convinced by the following means:

If they accept, aConfederation will be formed​​​​​​, and the player or whoever made the offer will become the leader. Players can then invite more rulers to join the fold.
