Summary

Fans hoping for a straight adaptation of the 2001 game will be disappointed in Netflix’sDevil May Cry,but that isn’t a bad thing. Instead, it’s a reboot of the series, or at least another stab at what makes Dante the best demon hunter around. There are only a handful of characters that fans will recognize in season one, which may upset some fans, but it was a smart move.

Showing too many characters in the first season would ruin the surprise for later seasons if Netflix gets another go atDevil May Cry. Consider, for example, Alucard was only teased in season one ofNetflix’sCastlevaniaadaptation. So, of the many characters in this decade-plus-old franchise, who should appear in season two? Can there be characters presented outside the norm?

Nero in Devil May Cry 5

6Nero

Johnny’s Other Self

Dante was the main protagonist in the first three games. Then, he was replaced inDevil May Cry 4with Nero, a younger demon hunter with the church who was learning fast after an attack. Dante did appear to show Nero the ropes, though. But like Raiden replacing Solid Snake inMetal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, some fans weren’t exactly thrilled with Nero.

Nero does get some redemption inDevil May Cry 5,as he was less of a whiny character and actually knew what he was doing. He even got acool cybernetic appendagewhich aided the gameplay, allowing him to do things like pull demons in to pull off some intricate combo moves. It may be too soon to put Nero into the second season of the Netflix anime, as Dante is still young himself, but it would still be cool to see Nero at some point. It’s funny that Johnny Yong Bosch, who voices Dante in the anime, did Nero in the games.

Nico in Devil May Cry 5

5Nicoletta “Nico” Goldstein

Every Hero Needs A Mechanic

If Nero gets into season two of the Netflix adaptation, then he has to have his friend along for the ride. Nicoletta, or Nico for short, first appeared inDevil May Cry 5as Nero’s upgrade mechanic. Even though she’s not a fighter, she has some of the coolest moves in the game as she appears whenever Nero needs an upgrade.

How she gets her van around in some of those dungeons is anyone’s guess. Even though she isn’t a playable character, Nico is not a typical southern belle, as she can handle herself. Season two could definitely use more female characters, and Nico would definitely fit the bill along with a few other choice characters from the franchise.

Trish in Devil May Cry 5

4Trish

Dante’s Original Lady Got Stood Up

Longtime fans ofDevil May Crywere probably shocked that Trish did not appear once in season one of the Netflix adaptation. Trish was Dante’s love interest in the first video game. She had many reoccurring appearances, includingDevil May Cry 5,along with most of the overall cast from the series up to that point. Trish was not a damsel in distress, as she actually lured Dante seemingly to his death before coming around in the end, sort of like how Lady befriends Dante at the end of season one of the anime.

There’s an infamous scene inDevil May Crywith Dante crying over Trish’s body, screaming about how he should have filled her body full of light. It’s one of the funniest scenes that has turned intoa lasting meme. It’s easy to see where Trish could fit into season two of the anime as she could be part of the demon rebellion who goes to free Dante from his prison. Suffice it to say, if Trish does not into the next season, then fans may likely riot.

Lucia in Netflix’s Devil May Cry

3Lucia

For Real This Time

Technically, Lucia does appear in season one of the anime, but because she’s barely even a footnote, she actually needs to become a character next season. Lucia is largely a forgotten character in the series because she was one of the two playable heroes inDevil May Cry 2, which is largely disliked by fans. It wasn’t what fans wanted at the time, but it isn’t a terrible game in hindsight. Lucia was actually a fun character to control, because she was more ninja-like than Dante. She appeared in a novel, a prequel toDevil May Cry 5, but she has not appeared in a video game since, which is a shame. Even ifDevil May Cry 2was perceived as a letdown, she shouldn’t be erased from the series.

Lucia appears at the end of episode one of the Netflix show, when Darkcom rounded up the demon hunters looking for Dante. She gets one good scene spitting in the face of a soldier, and then that’s it. There are normal allusions as to what happened to her after. Hopefully, her inclusion wasn’t an Easter egg for longtime fans, and she actually gets to be a character in season two.

Leon in the Resident Evil 4 remake

2Leon S. Kennedy

I Left Raccoon City For This?

This may seem like a wild pick, but it’s not without reason to includeLeon S. Kennedyfrom theResident Evilseries, which is also owned by Capcom. Dante’s broker, Enzo, references giving Dante a job in Raccoon City, which is where Leon is from. Compared to New York City, Raccoon City is supposed to be somewhere in the Midwest far away.

How season two could get Leon to New York City to assist Dante is anyone’s guess, but it would be a fun crossover. Adi Shankar’s various anime adaptations at Netflix have had crossovers before, like a Metal Gear appearing in the Castlevania anime (albeit through a multiverse portal). Leon would fit into theDevil May Cryworld better than a Metal Gear would in ancientCastlevaniatimes anyway.

Dante in DmC Devil May Cry

1Dante (DmC: Devil May Cry Version)

Creating The Multiverse

Season two could get even wilder by not just creating an interconnected Capcom universe, but creating a multiverse ofDevil May Crycharacters. All five numbered games in the franchise are connected even though some would rather forget aboutDevil May Cry 2. The only exception isDmC: Devil May Cry,a reboot handled by a differentdeveloper, Ninja Theory.

That version of Dante was more of a punk than a rocker but still full of cheesy one-liners. It would be interesting to include that Dante in some form like a league of Dante clones to save the multiverse. That seems more like a season three or four type of storyline and perhaps even a ripoff of the recent Spider-Man animated movies, but it’s something to keep on the back burner.
