Since the start of the Academy Saga, we were introduced to a new Fourth Horseman attending the same high school as Denji and Asa. With her unique eyes resembling those of the other members of the Four Horsemen, she introduces herself toAsa and Yoruas the Famine Devil, “Fami.” At the time, there was no reason to suspect otherwise, as Yoru acknowledged her identity as the Famine Devil.
However, throughout the series, “Fami” orchestrates numerous events and situations to her liking, all of which lead to the potential fulfillment of theNostradamus Prophecy: the arrival of the Death Devil, which would bring about the end of humanity and the age of Devils. At that time, “Fami” manipulates those around her into believing that she is on the side of humanity and that everything she has been attempting to achieve is to prevent its destruction.
At this rate, neither I… nor you… Nor Chainsaw Man will be able to stop the prophecy.
Although she seemed to have good intentions regarding the prevention of humanity’s destruction, her actions often conflicted with her words, making her true intentions unclear. Nonetheless, she easily gained thetrust of Asa, Yoru, and those around her with little effort. However, in Chapter 198, this persona will soon come crumbling down.
In Chapter 195, a new character is hinted at, potentially the Death Devil. Instead, we meet a trembling and crying young girl, filled with dread at the thought of the humans dying around her. While it might initially appear that this is the Death Devil’s quirky nature manifesting, given her reactions and the discussions about death suggesting she isthe feared Devil of destruction, this assumption is quickly proven incorrect.
Later, in Chapter 198, the supposed “Death Devil” encounters a fake Chainsaw Man, who appears to know about Denji’s obsession with money. In this chapter, Chainsaw Man condemns the alleged Death Devil; however, she soon reveals herself to be the Famine Devil and prefers to be called Fami. This revelation is undeniably shocking, as the “Famine Devil” had already been introduced in the previous chapter during the Dating Denji arc.
Shortly thereafter, reinforcing her introduction, the true Death Devil arrives accompanied by the Falling Devil. The Death Devil represents a deep-rooted fear, capturing one of humanity’s oldest andmost primal fears, establishing her as a formidable presence. Thus, it’s not surprising that the Falling Devil follows her every command. Earlier, it was questionable that the Falling Devil would serve “Fami,” as characters like Makima, Nayuta, and Yoru needed to exert their powers to compel a Devil to their will, unlike the Death Devil.
Fami is on the Side of Humanity
Fami Seeks to Save Humanity via Death
With every character except Nayuta now present on the field, it appears that the Death Devil embodies an idealized version of Fami. Throughout the series, theDeath Devil has been trying to stop humanity’s destruction, as previously noted. With the real Fami now emerging, she showed considerable empathy for humans, frequently expressing her desire to save them and free them from their earthly suffering.
Um! So this is sudden, but… I’m here… to save you guys!
In Chapter 195, Fami informs the students of her intention to rescue them utilizing her unique abilities. The nature of Fami’s “special powers” remains uncertain. Initially, it was postulated that Fami possessed the capability to enslave others through the act of starvation, a notion consistent with her representation as the embodiment of Famine. However, this concept was later clarified to pertain to thepowers of the Death Devils. Although the specifics of her “special powers” continue to be ambiguous, Fami asserts her ability to “absorb all life.” This is achieved through physical contact with a living organism, during which she induces starvation and depletes the individual of their essential nutrients to revive herself.
Although Fami states she wants to save humanity and weeps at the thought of their suffering, she also claims she “saves people from their suffering through death.” To Fami, it seems that she believes death is the quickest way to end one’s suffering. Famine is associated with starvation, which can be mentally and physically draining for those who experience it. Therefore, it’s likely that Fami thinks death is the fastest way to alleviate this suffering.
Fami’s actual plan to save humanity remains unknown. However, she has proven to be incredibly perceptive, especially during the fight with the fake Chainsaw Man. In that confrontation, she could accurately deduce that the fake Chainsaw Man had dabbled in karate and some boxing. Despite being exceptionally weak during the fight, having been cut multiple times, Fami demonstrates remarkable perceptiveness. That is, until the Death Devil arrived, commanding the Falling Devil to subdue Fami.
