CD Projekt Red has issued a warning about a recently emerged scam masquerading as a beta test invite forThe Witcher 4. This public service announcement isn’t the only thing thatThe Witcher 4developer is doing in response to the scam.

The fourth mainline entry in CDRP’s hit RPG series was originally confirmed to be in the works in March 2022.The Witcher 4then received its first cinematic trailerin December 2024, revealing Ciri as its protagonist. Despite the RPG being nowhere close to releasing, at least one unknown party has reportedly been attempting to scam people by posing as a source ofThe Witcher 4beta access as of late. CD Projekt Red addressed the issue on April 16, warning fans that no such beta exists. The Witcher 4developerhas also revealed that it has taken steps to prevent this fraudulent outreach moving forward, albeit without elaborating on the matter any further.

CDPR’s The Witcher 4 Beta Scam PSA

The scope of the ongoing beta scam is unclear, as are its true goals. Generally speaking, there are multiple reasons why malicious parties might want to mislead people into signing up for something that doesn’t exist. A common motivation is data harvesting, done with the goal of selling basic contact information like emails or conductingfull-fledged phishingin order to compromise accounts. Alternatively, if this newly identified scam is attempting to convince people to download something to their PCs, then that something is almost certainly malware.

Beta Tests Aren’t Really CDPR’s Thing

The very premise of this ongoing scam is questionable, mostly because none of CDPR’s single-player games ever had beta tests.Gwent: The Witcher Card Gamehad two betas in 2016 and 2017, but that’s pretty much the full extent of the company’s public testing efforts, as far as non-mobile games are concerned. Moving forward, it’s possible thatThe Witchermultiplayer game code-named Project Siriuswill have a beta, simply on account of having server infrastructure in need of stress-testing. ButThe Witcher 4seems unlikely to require such initiatives.

During a recent earnings call, CDPR revealed that it’s not planning to launchThe Witcher 4during its upcoming fiscal year. The comment puts the game’s release in 2027 at the earliest. It’s therefore possible thatThe Witcher 4might end up skipping the current console generation in its entirety.
