The Molasses Flood has been absorbed intoCD Projekt Red. Purchased byCD Projekt Redin 2021, the Boston-based studio was responsible for creating “Project Sirius,” a multiplayer game set in the universe of the popularWitcherseries.
Originally revealed in 2022, together with aWitcher 1remake andThe Witcher 4, Project Sirius was marketed as a single-player game with multiplayer elements. Unfortunately, not many details about the upcoming title have been shared since then, andProject Sirius reportedly had some development troubles, which led CD Projekt Red to restart development on the title with a new framework in 2023. In the following year, 29 people were laid off from The Molasses Flood, and the title is still in pre-production at the time of this report.
Now, The Molasses Flood has confirmed on itsofficial websitethat it’s being absorbed by CD Projekt Red, ceasing to be a separate studio. The decision was first revealed a few weeks ago, when CD Projekt Red confirmed thatThe Molasses Flood would be merged with CDPR devsto “better align the scope and direction of the project.”In a LinkedIn post, The Molasses Flood co-founder Damian Isla called the merger “the end of an era,” but also indicated that this was a good decision for the studio in the long term.
The Molasses Flood Absorbed By CD Projekt Red 4 Years After Being Acquired
With these reports, it’s fair to think that Project Sirius still has a long way to go before being ready for launch. Fortunately, the otherWitcherprojects being developed by CDPR seem to be progressing more smoothly. The Witcher 4entered production early last year, and over 400 developers are working on the game. The Witcher 4is not expected to be out anytime soon, however, as recent fiscal earnings reports at CDPR indicate that the eagerly-awaited title may not launch until in 2027.
One of the main differences between the upcoming title and the previous games in the franchise is thatCiri will be the protagonist ofThe Witcher 4instead of Geralt of Rivia. According to CDPR, this will change the story and gameplay in significant ways, with Ciri being more nimble than Geralt, for example, which is likely to give the game a different feel. In some interviews, CDPR also pointed out that the game’s NPCs have more immersive stories and interactions. Hopefully, these new features will make for an exciting game whenThe Witcher 4is finally out.
