In 2018, Capcom released a remaster ofOnimusha: Warlords. 7 years later, Capcom is releasing a remaster ofOnimusha 2: Samurai’s Destinyin May, with a brand new entry (Onimusha: Way of the Sword) coming next year. The originalOnimusha 2released in 2002 as the first game ever directed by Motohide Eshiro, and Capcom brought him back into the role for its remaster. His main role at Capcom is as a producer, having worked on games in theAce Attorneyseries,Okamiden, andDMC: Devil May Cry.

Game Rant recently visited the Capcom office in San Francisco to speak with Motohide Eshiro(via translator)about this remaster ofOnimusha 2and the future of the franchise. As he revealed,Onimusha 2was always planned afterOnimusha: Warlords, but circumstances and timing saw the team split up to work on other projects.Onimusha: Way of the Swordbeing in the workswas the reason for the team uniting once more to tackleOnimusha 2. Of course, with this remaster and a new game on the way, many fans may be curious if remasters ofOnimusha 3: Demon SiegeandOnimusha: Dawn of Dreamsare on the table.

Could Onimusha 3 and Dawn of Dreams Remasters Happen?

It’s worth noting that he did not work on these two titles, nor are his words any sort of confirmation or tease. They come from Eshiro as a fan of the franchise. When asked if he thought theseOnimusharemasterswere possible, he said,

“He does personally hope that those titles will come back again some day as a remaster or in any form, so that fans will be able to play the game again on modern consoles. He’d be happy to see them somewhere, someday in the future.”

Expanding the World of Onimusha

Eshiro is, of course, not the only one who hopes to see this happen. Not only is a significant portion of the fanbase interested in anOnimusharevival, butOnimusha 3actor Jean Renohas also indicated his willingness to reprise the role of Jacques Blanc, the first Westerner to wield Oni Power. We also asked what stands out to him throughoutOnimusha’s history, from working onOnimusha 2in the early 2000s, from working onOnimusha 2’s remaster in 2025, and from seeing what’s coming withOnimusha: Way of Sword. To him, it’s all about growing the world ofOnimusha, literally and supernaturally, while also adding more ways for players to engage with the series:

“Over this history of more than 20 years, it’s all been about expanding the world of Onimusha, adding fresh new gameplay, more action, and more features to the games, so that players can enjoy a variety of aspects of the Onimusha series. There is going to be Onimusha: Way of the Sword released next year, but he personally hopes that if there are any more upcoming Onimusha games, there will be more and more expansion of the world. He wants more and more players to enjoy the game, so yeah, he hopes that the world of Onimusha will continue to expand more in the future.”

It remains to be seen how the world ofOnimushacontinues to expand, but with the recent remasters giving players new ways to experience the games andOnimusha: Way of the Swordfocusing on compelling characters, a Kyoto setting, and advancing the franchise’s swordplay, the franchise’s horizons have certainly grown over the past 20+ years.
