Over 10 years ago, long before I began drawing A Witch’s Life in Mongol, I was fascinated by the history of the Mongolian Empire. I often thought, ‘I wish there were an anime like this.’ That thought led me to daydream: If such an anime existed, what kind of characters would appear? What sort of story would unfold?

A Unique Historical Fiction Manga
Set in the thirteenth century,A Witch’s Life in Mongolis set in Yeke Mongol Ulus, the great Mongolian Empire of yore and follows Fatima, a young woman from the medically and technologically advanced empire of Persia. Looking to test her expertise, Fatima finds herself at the palace of the Mongols, under the wing of Töregene, the sixth wife of Ögedei, the second Great Khan. Töregene has complicated feelings about the direction the empire has taken, and soon enough, together with Fatima, she will become a main character in the arena of global politics.
The manga has been published on Akita Shoten’s Souffle website since September 2021, with the fifth volume set to be released on April 16.A Witch’s Life in Mongolalso began publishing bimonthly in Akita Shoten’s Mystery Bonita in March this year, but will go on hiatus in the summer for the author’s maternity leave. Yen Press has licensed the series for distribution in English, with the first volume set to drop in May. The series wastop of the chartsin the 2023 Kono Manga ga Sugoi! rankings for female readers, going on to place 11th in the following year’s rankings. Tomato Soup also shared a new illustration in celebration of the announcement.
